# Merrimack boys lacrosse hoping to build on experiences of a year ago

Merrimack feels good about the players it has back for the boys lacrosse season.

Brian Miller admits that on paper, there appears to be some holes in the starting lineup for the Merrimack High School boys lacrosse team.

But Miller knows there's more to his players than what's written down on a roster or a depth chart.

"We have a lot of offense coming back this year, but we lost the entire starting defense to graduation," Miller said. "I guess, on paper, you would look at us and say we have a lot of scorers coming back and are in a position where they were major contributors on offense, and then we have some new faces (on defense). They’re new to starting, they aren't new to the varsity experience."

Many of the Tomahawks varsity players have played a lot at that level in other sports, and the ones Miller will be counting on to step up have seen the field before, albeit to varying degrees. The strength of Merrimack's roster could be a large junior class.

With Miller in his second year leading the Tomahawks, the team has been able to hit the ground running this spring.

"Any new head coach to program, in years two and three, you start referencing things from last year, and they get it a lot quicker," Miller said. "You don't have to spend as much time explaining things, and that's good for both the guys who have been there and the guys that haven't. Then they can see it and learn it a little quicker.

"Even (Friday), we were putting in a little offense and I was putting out some of our traditional calls, and guys knew exactly what I was talking about. We don't have to spend time teaching concepts."

After missing the Division II playoffs last year, the Tomahawks are hopeful to get back, and while Bedford, the two-time defending champion, is the clear favorite, Miller believes the rest of the division is wide open.

"After Bedford, you've got teams like Goffstown, who has a ton coming back," he said. "Bow has a lot coming back. Division II is very competitive. There are 12 teams in the division and teams two through 10 are pretty competitive.

"I think you saw last year, on any given day, it's anybody's game. We had a young group last year and we hung tight with a lot of teams late in games, and then for whatever reason, we had trouble in the fourth quarter. Some good teams pulled away from us. We think that we'll be able to hang tight more this year."
