MERRIMACK – Eric Gendron scored six of his 22 points in overtime to help the Merrimack High School boys basketball team rally Friday night to beat Winnacunnet 61-57.

Gendron scored Merrimack's first six points in overtime, and helped set up two other baskets, as the Tomahawks ended the game on an 11-4 run to improve to 6-3 in Division I. Ryan Giglioti also had 22 points for Winnacunnet (4-5), which led by 11 points in the first half and nine in the second half.

Austin Franzen added 15 points and Shayne Bourque chipped in with nine for Merrimack, as both scored in overtime to help close out the game. Ben Gareau also had 10 points for the Warriors.

Merrimack's Eric Gendron puts up a shot during the second half Friday.

“We did some good things and we did some not so good things,” Merrimack coach Tim Goodridge said. “We didn’t play in the first quarter but we dug ourselves out of a hole with defense. Then we had a tough third quarter. We’ve got to put together 32 minutes.”

Merrimack trailed by as many as nine in the second half, and was down by six with 3:23 to play, but the ’Hawks closed the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to tie the game on a basket by Gendron. The junior then scored Merrimack’s first six points of the overtime to give the ’Hawks the lead for good.

“Eric Gendron was the difference in that game,” Goodridge said. “He’s a heck of a player.”

In the first quarter, it seemed like Gendron, or anyone else for Merrimack, could do much of anything. After the ’Hawks took an early two-point lead, the Warriors went on a 12-0 run and ended the first quarter up 22-11.

But Merrimack’s defense tightened in the second and the ’Hawks outscored Winnacunnet 17-6 in the quarter to tie the game at 28 at halftime.

The second started off just like the first, as Winnacunnet went on a 9-0 run to go up 37-28\. Merrimack didn’t score its first points until Gendron hit a jumper with 3:29 left in the third quarter. The Warriors went back up by nine on their next possession and were still ahead by seven going into the third quarter.

Giglioti’s three-point play with 3:23 left made it 46-40 Warriors, but a 3 by Franzen and a three-point play by Mitch Denton tied the game at 46 with 1:48 to go.

Rich Ruffin gave the Warriors the lead right back, but Gendron tied it again with 34 seconds left.

Winnacunnet went ahead 53-50 early in the overtime, but Merrimack’s 11-4 run to end the game sealed the victory.
