# McRae, South blow past North

NASHUA – It was the Armond McRae show at Stellos Stadium Thursday night, but that was because no one else had a chance to get on stage for the Nashua High School South football team.

McRae touched the football eight times for 248 yards and four touchdowns as the Panthers blew past Nashua North, 47-0, in a Division I game.

Two of McRae’s touchdowns came on the ground, both on that drive’s first play from scrimmage. He also took a pass from quarterback Trevor Knight 57 yards for a touchdown – that drive’s third play – and the senior running back returned the kickoff to open the second half 74 yards for a score.

South ran just 24 plays in the first half, almost half of which came on one first-quarter drive that ended on a missed field goal. That was the only first-half drive for the Panthers (3-1 in division, 5-1 overall) that didn’t end with a touchdown.

“We were hoping to throw a little more tonight,” South coach Scott Knight said. “We just didn’t get the reps. I don’t ever want to say please don’t score, but … We were going to go with our (first string) on that drive (to open the second half). We had things we wanted to do on that drive and we didn’t get a chance to do it.”

McRae wasn’t entirely alone. Derek Paradis rushed for 55 yards on four carries, three of which came on one drive. Knight was 3 for 5 for 83 yards and two touchdowns, and also ran for another 40 yards and a score.

“That’s a very good football team,” North coach Jason Robie said. “That’s a physical, fast, aggressive football team. We saw some things tonight, but I don’t know how much of a challenge we provided in any area. I’m disappointed in our guys. I feel like we didn’t respond like we have responded. We got beat in every phase of the game, top to bottom.”

North got a boost from the return of running back Marc Lavine and quarterback Taylor Miranda, but neither was a match for a defense that was fired up to play the Titans (1-4, 2-4).

When they come to play, they fly around,” Scott Knight said of his defense. “We played like we can.”

“They came out to make a statement tonight,” Robie said.

The Panthers did on the game’s opening drive, as Joseph Haftel intercepted a pass from Miranda and returned it to the North 11-yard line. Two plays later, Trevor Knight found Connor Rogowsky for a 6-yard touchdown pass, making 7-0 before the game was two minutes old.

North was forced to punt on its next drive, and McRae took the handoff on the ensuing play, racing around the left side and down the sideline for a 55-yard touchdown run. The extra point by Chris Dennis made it 14-0 with 7:37 still to play in the quarter.

The Titans were forced to punt on their next four drives, picking up just four first downs in the process. While North was punting, South was scoring, going up 34-0 at halftime.

“We let a team to get off to a fast start and we can’t rebound from it,” Robie said. “Part of it is what they’re doing, but part of it is our mistakes.”

Lavine led North with 58 yards rushing, but didn’t play after halftime following a hand injury. The senior was getting X-rays after the game, but no update on his status was available.
