The sophomore knew her Mascenic Regional High School field hockey team needed her to forget the fatigue of double overtime and keep going. So as teammate Ava Haavisto sent the ball down field, Saari burst past Hopkinton's last line of defenders, giving herself plenty of space to keep possession of the ball while running at top speed. With three Hawks players on her heels, Saari got into the circle and put the ball in the near corner to give No. 3 Mascenic a 3-2 victory over No. 2 Hopkinton in Wednesday's Division III semifinal at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter. "Exhausted," Saari said of how she felt. "I do it for my team. I do it for everyone who has ever played (for Mascenic). I do it for myself. I do it because I love it and they all give me motivation and strength for sure." The goal, which came with 5:56 left in the second overtime, sends the Vikings (13-3) to the championship game for the first time since 2001, when they won the second of back-to-back Class M-S titles. Mascenic will face No. 4 St. Thomas, who beat top-seeded Berlin in the other semifinal, at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bedford High School in the D3 championship game. "You just lay it all out there with your heart and that’s what it comes down to," Mascenic coach Selena Shaw said. "We don’t get tired, we get better. When you have girls like Hailey, it’s true, because they buy in and they get better. She’s fast and she put the wheels on. When she got a little bit of space there, I was like ‘let’s go.’" Scarlet Neilson and Kiahna Farrey also had goals for Mascenic, as they scored four minutes and 32 seconds apart in the fourth quarter to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead with 8:11 to play. Brielle Krook picked up an assist on Farrey's goal and Evelyn Shippee recorded 16 saves, seven of which came in the first quarter. "She made some fantastic saves," Shaw said. "Evelyn has been unreal for us all season. She’s only a sophomore and she’s willing to sacrifice her body." The Vikings made it out of the opening 15 minutes scoreless with Hopkinton (14-2-1), but it took just 58 seconds for the Hawks to change that, as Autumn Meier ripped a shot from the top of the circle that found its way in for a 1-0 Hopkinton lead. Hopkinton got a penalty corner moments later, but Shippee made a save and Mascenic's defense cleared the ball. The Vikings were able to get a couple of chances of their own, but the game remained 1-0 at halftime. Shippee had to make a couple more saves to open the third quarter, as the Hawks had two corners to started the second half. But as the frame went on, Mascenic's defense was able to limit Hopkinton's opportunities. "We got more locked in and started to see where they were going to pass and who their bigger players were, so we could make those changes," Krook said. "It takes time for us to settle in," Haavisto said. "We tend to start slow and we build and build and build. We’ve been doing that all year, in games and this season. We keep building on what we had before." It paid off at the start of the fourth quarter. Mascenic got a corner right off the bat, and with 12:43 left in the game, Neilson knocked the ball out of a crowd and into the goal to tie it up. The Vikings got another chance right away, but Hopkinton's Maddie Dwyer made a stop at the goal line. Mascenic got another corner moments later and a reverse hit by Farrey took an odd bounce on its way in to beat Heidi Archambault (12 saves), giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead with 8:11 remaining. But Hopkinton wasn't done, as Meier finally broke free on a rush, and after stepping into the circle, crushed a shot that hit the far corner of the goal to tie it back up 2-2 with 2:38 to play. The junior had the ball in the circle again with time winding down, but couldn't get a shot off before the end of regulation. After Mascenic opened the overtime with a corner, Hopkinton had four straight, but couldn't get the ball past Shippee, and the game remained tied 2-2. The Vikings got a scoring chance to open the second overtime, but Archambault made the save and the Hawks were able to get the ball to the other end and keep it there for a while. But with Hopkinton creeping up looking for a goal, Mascenic was quickly able to transition the ball out of its own end. Haavisto's pass hit Saari in stride as she bolted toward midfield. "I looked up and saw no one there and I thought this is giving me motivation to go," Saari said. "I could feel them behind me and I just kept going. I saw the goalie pop to the other (far) corner so I shot it at the (near) corner and it felt good." After making the pass, Haavisto had a good feeling. "I started praying," she said. "It’s Hailey, she’s done it before and she’s going to do it again. I knew that was going in."
