On the other hand, the junior midfielder’s work in the faceoff circle set the tone for the second-seeded Astros in their Division I boys lacrosse quarterfinal win over the seventh-seeded Panthers. Pinkerton built a 6-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and a 14-0 lead heading into the final minute of the first half - all thank’s to Marra’s faceoff dominance, according to Astros’ leading scorer Chad Teresky. “It all starts from our faceoff guy, Gennaro Marra,” said Teresky, who scored a game-high four goals. “I mean he set the pace winning the faceoffs - giving us possession of the ball - and we just capitalized on his getting us the ball so many times.” Marra won 13 of the 15 faceoffs he took in the first half. There were 16 total faceoffs in the first two quarters. Those numbers led directly to the Astros’ offensive success Saturday, and a trip to Tuesday’s semifinals at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter, according to Pinkerton coach Brian O’Reilly. Pinkerton will now face third-seeded Exeter in the 5 p.m. matchup. The Blue Hawks beat sixth-seeded Salem 14-8 in the quarterfinal round. Things were going so smoothly through the first two quarters of Saturday’s home game that O’Reilly was at a loss for words in the locker room during halftime. “I thought we played very well,” the Astros coach said of his 17-2 squad. “We did exactly what we wanted to do in the first half - we wanted to spin the ball, move it quick, attack quickly. Defensively, we had a couple of schemes we wanted to work on, and they worked out very well. Alex (Sturgess) was Alex as always in goal, and Gennaro just pretty much wins every faceoff. “I was very, very pleased. It was one of the rare times, I told them at halftime, that I didn’t have much to say.” Teresky and Co. did plenty of talking on the field for Pinkerton. Ryan Auger and Chris Valentine each scored two goals, while chipping in with five and three assists respectively to help Teresky lead the Astros’ offense. Owen McCormack, Tom Sweeney and Hunter Drouin also added two goals each for Pinkerton, while Keegan Wilder and Pat Last joined Marra with a goal apiece in the win. South (9-9) was shut out in the first quarter, and could only score once - the first of two Joe Bodi tallies - in the second quarter. The Panthers added two more goals in the third quarter, courtesy of Drew Fleury and Devin Linscott, and four more in the fourth, from Bodi, Sean Holland, Tyler Bernard and Jaden Murphy. The majority of South’s offense was generated against Pinkerton’s second- and third-string units. A fact not lost on Panthers coach Bill Monsen, who redirected the focus back onto Marra. “Their faceoff guy is the best in the state,” Monsen said, “and he showed it (Saturday). He really took it to us.”
