MANCHESTER - Mark Putney thought that if his Manchester Memorial High School boys hockey team was going to beat Merrimack goalie Brett Glendye Wednesday, it would have to take advantage of all its opportunities. Brady Sufat did that late in the third period, and it got the Crusaders a win. When Merrimack turned the puck over deep in its own end, Sufat was there to capitalize, beating Glendye for the game-winning goal with 4:29 left. Brendan Sullivan had a hat trick for Memorial and Jacob Boylan and Bryan Syrene each had a goal and an assist to help the Crusaders rally from a 2-0 deficit. Merrimack's Josh Roy also had a hat trick for the 'Hawks. Down by two with under four minutes to play in the second, Memorial outscored Merrimack 6-2 the rest of the way by taking advantage of second chances. "We did a good job of trying to get pucks to the net, especially against Glendye," Putney said. "He's going to make the first save because he's a top goaltender. We talked about that we knew we needed to get second-shot opportunities in order to get goals. Despite controlling play in the first period, Memorial had nothing to show for it, thanks largely in part to Glendye. The senior, who finished with 38 saves, stopped all 11 shots he faced in the opening frame. "That's what I've come to know from Brett, having coached him the last couple of years," Merrimack coach Kurt Mithoefer said. "He steps up big in big games. Coming out in the first, we were a bit flat, and he needed to make those big saves." The biggest came on a Memorial power play late in the period. Merrimack killed it off and then got a man-advantage of its own. It took the 'Hawks just 13 seconds into the power play to get on the board, as Mark Feeney buried a rebound past Memorial goalie Aaron Nicolas with 9.8 seconds left in the period. Merrimack made it 2-0 with another power play goal, this time from Josh Roy, with 5:13 left in the second period. The goal seemed to wake the Crusaders, and it took less than two minutes for Sullivan to get Memorial on the board. Boylan then tied it up 1:20 later, scoring on the power play with 2:01 left in the second. "They need to be patient," Putney said. "I told them not to panic. We controlled the first period, but we had nothing to show for it. Sullivan gave Memorial its first lead a little more than four minutes into the third period, burying a rebound past Glendye. Roy brought Merrimack right back, beating Nicolas high to the glove side to tie the game 43 seconds later. But Sullivan came through again, putting Memorial back on top 17 seconds after Roy's goal. The 'Hawks fought back again, as Roy picked up his third goal with 5:44 to play, tying the game at 4. "It shows that they don't quit," Mithoefer said. "I knew that's how we were. We've gone down early in a couple of other games and they just don't quit. They know they're a good team and we can make up for those differences." But there was one miscue from which the 'Hawks were unable to recover. With 4:29 to play, an errant Merrimack pass left the puck loose in front of Glendye. Sufat was the closest player to it, and the Memorial junior took advantage, giving the Crusaders the lead for good. Syrene added a goal on a penalty shot and Memorial avenged a loss to Merrimack in last year's tournament championship game. "They're excited," Putney said. "I think they feel the pressure more than the coaches do. To them, it's another game and they want to make sure they come out and win it." Both teams play again on Thursday, with Merrimack taking on Trinity at 2 p.m. and Memorial facing Goffstown at 8 p.m.
