MANCHESTER - Eric Langley felt the Manchester Memorial High School boys hockey team needed someone in front of the net.

The Crusaders had been firing shots at Bow goalie Nate Carrier for most of their man-advantage opportunity in overtime, but either the puck wasn't getting through, or the freshman netminder was making saves.

With time running out on the overtime, Langley went to the net, corralled a rebound and knocked it past Carrier to give the Crusaders a 2-1 win over the Falcons in the Bauer Christmas Hockey Classic.

Bow's Josh Connor sends a shot at Memorial goalie Jarrod Broussard.

"We needed a net-front presence," Langley said. "They were playing us hard during the 4-on-3, so I thought if somebody could get to the net, it might bounce off and put it in."

The game-winner came with 23.1 seconds left before the end of overtime, and by tournament rules, a three-man shootout would take place. Instead, Memorial won its fourth close game of the season; the Crusaders are 3-0 in Division I play this year.

"We're lucky," Memorial coach Mark Putney said. "They've all been really one-goal games. One had an empty-netter. The guys know. When they came over the bench when it went into overtime, they said 'we've been in this position before.' Let's go work hard and they did."

Carrier finished the game with 16 saves, while Memorial goalie Jarrod Broussard had 22 stops, including several that kept the game scoreless through two periods.

"He really kept us in the game and stood on his head," Langley said of Broussard. "We left him out to dry a couple of times, but he played phenomenal."

A bad break for Broussard and Memorial led to Bow's goal in the third period. The Falcons brought play into the zone, but the Crusaders appeared to stop the rush when Patrick Goren had the puck get caught in his skates.

But the Memorial sophomore couldn't find it, and the puck instead bounced to Bow's Doug Chanpagne, who ripped a shot to the far side of the net and by Broussard for a 1-0 Falcons lead at 3:59 of the third.

Memorial had a couple of power play opportunities in the period, but when Jeff Bell was called for a slash with teammate Colin Tracy already in the box for interference, the Crusaders were given a two-man advantage for 15 seconds. Putney used his team's timeout.

"My main objective was that that line had been out for a little while and now we had a 5-on-3 opportunity," the coach said. "I wanted to keep that line fresh. That ate up 30 seconds of the timeout. I wanted them to be patient, keep the puck moving and get two guys to the puck. We had to win any battles with the puck."

The Crusaders did, as Jacob Poitras scored at 11:48 of the period to tie the game 1-1\. Memorial had a chance to win at the end of regulation, when Carrier made a stop on a hard shot from Memorial and the rebound bounced out. But no one could get to it before time expired.

Memorial will take on Trinity at 6 p.m. Sunday night, while Bow faces Concord at 4 p.m. Concord defeated Trinity 6-2 in the third game Saturday, while Hanover blanked Goffstown 3-0 in the final game of the day.
