After watching the Bulldogs come back from an early deficit to take a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, Memorial went on a 15-1 run and made it free throws down the stretch to hang on for an 80-76 win over Bedford in Division I action. Nick Philbert led Memorial (7-3) with 21 points while Brandon Scott added 18 points as the Crusaders scored 37 points in the fourth quarter, including 11 of 14 at the line in the final 90 seconds, to come back for the win. "Professional teams would love to (score 37)," Memorial coach Jack Quirk said. "We're a team that goes on runs and we had two runs, one at the beginning and one at the end. I guess if you're going to have that, it's important to have that one at the end." Jake Carrier was also in double figures for Memorial with 16 points, going 7 of 8 on free throws in the fourth quarter, and Malo Roumraj added 14 points, six of which came during the run. "We played hard and we played well," Bedford coach Mark Elmendorf said. "We said if we keep them under 65 or so, we'd be OK. They go on runs and it's hard to stop them. We just didn't do it." The Bulldogs (7-3) got 26 points from Colby Gendron, 20 of which came in the second half, while Ryan Hughes hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Brayden Moreno added 13 points, seven of which came in the final 1:08 as Bedford tried to come back. Memorial jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first quarter and went up 26-16 just 1:20 into the second. But moments later, Scott, who scored 12 of Memorial's points to that point, picked up his second and sat for the rest of the half. Bedford was able to get its offense going after that, going on a 15-4 run to take a 31-30 lead into halftime. A free throw by Roumraj made it a two-point game, 45-43, with 2:34 left in the third, but the Bulldogs went on an 8-0 run, with Gendron scoring all eight points, to take a 10-point lead with 7:38 to play. "He's a large player, he's a good player and we just wanted to contain him," Scott said of Gendron. "We wanted to contain him and make sure we got the outside shooters as well. I think we did a better job of that in the first half than the second half." Quirk wanted to see his players help out on Gendron, and once they did, the Crusaders were able to slow Bedford's offense down. "He's tough, but it was a combination of our kids not recognizing situations that we'd talked about," the coach said. And at the other end, Roumraj was able to give Memorial the spark it needed, scoring on a couple putbacks to get his team going. Back-to-back baskets by the senior, sandwiched around a Bedford free throw, and a layup by Philibert made it 54-49. A Bedford turnover led to a fastbreak basket by Scott and a 3-pointer from Philibert tied the game at 54\. The Bulldogs turned it over on their next two possessions, leading to two more baskets by Memorial and a 58-54 lead for the Crusaders with 4:45 to play. "I thought it was going to be tight the whole game and then we came back after a poor first quarter," Elmendorf said. "We were in really good shape and then it was one of their famous runs. "I thought we did a nice job of trying to extend the game as long as possible, but they kept hitting them. We made some nice baskets at the end and went to the hole well, we just ran out of time." Bedford began fouling with 2:34 still to play, but it looked like a lost cause when Memorial went up 69-61 with 1:30 left in the game. But two fouls by Memorial and a 3-pointer from Hughes helped Bedford make it a three-point game, 75-72, with 21.4 seconds left, even though the Crusaders were making their free throws. With 7.7 seconds left, Jake Santiago made the first of two free throws to put Memorial up 78-74, but missed the second. Bedford got the rebound and scored, but before the buzzer sounded, Justin Hayes was called for a technical foul when he touched the ball after the basket. Philibert shot two free throws after the game had ended to give Memorial the four-point win.
