Robert Hailey knew coming into this season there would be a steep learning curve for his Salem High School boys lacrosse team.

Fresh off a playoff appearance, the Blue Devils graduated a handful of key players and had to look to freshmen and sophomores to replace them.

Despite a 4-9 record in Division I, Hailey has liked what he has seen from his Salem squad, and believes things are going in the right direction.

"We're young and we make some young mistakes, but I'm keeping my eye on the big prize," Hailey said. "Rome wasn't built in a day. The majority of our players are freshmen and sophomores. We're taking baby steps."

One bright spot for Salem this year has been the defense, which has allowed 9.1 goals per game. That number falls to 6.2 if losses to the division's top four - Pinkerton, Bishop Guertin, Bedford and Exeter - are removed.

Leading the way there has been goalie Sebastian Farah, another sophomore who has been stellar for the Blue Devils.

"He's been a huge part of the team all season long," Hailey said of his goalie. "He's good with the clear. He's a field general, which is what you want your goaltender to be. He's calling all the defenses.

"In the past, we haven't had the most athletic goaltenders. Sebastian plays on the hockey team, he's really athletic."

Nashua South was able to score 10 goals against Farah and Salem on May 11, but Panthers coach Bill Monsen noted that had the Blue Devils goalie not made some key plays, it could have been more.

"Give that kid all the credit in the world, he did a heck of a job," Monsen said. "That kid is explosive with some quick hands. He did a great job and he stifled us where a lot of other goalies would have given up at least two or three more (goals). He was huge for them."

Salem has some winnable games in the final week of the season, but the Blue Devils would need a lot of help to make the postseason. They do have a rematch with South in their regular-season finale.

"I'm looking forward to that," Hailey said.

### More from the attack

Chris Cameron knew going into the season he was going to need to get a lot out of his attackmen if the Bishop Guertin boys lacrosse team was going to continue to play at a high level.

With teams looking to shut down senior Nick Prunier and doing whatever they can to take away midfielders Tim Hinrichs and Charlie O'Brien, the other attackmen were going to have to step up, and in recent games, they have been.

"I've been tough on them but we need them," Cameron said. "One thing we've been looking for all year is the attack to step up. We definitely needed it (last Saturday against Cohasset)."

Hinrichs and O'Brien both had an off day against the Skippers, and Prunier, who scored two late key goals against Bedford the game before, was held to just one goal.

"Nick is always going to get the top defenseman," Cameron said. "Then they double poled and slid to try to take Tim and Charlie out of it, so we needed other guys to step up.

"We had Garret Bozek beat his guys and score and (Michael) O’Reilly caught one inside and scored. We got some production from our attackmen."

If the Cardinals can get consistent scoring from that group, even if it's just a couple of goals a game, they'll be in good shape.

### The team to beat

It wasn't pretty, but the Laconia boys lacrosse team remained as one of two undefeated boys teams in the state with its 11-10 overtime win at Monadnock on Tuesday.

The Sachems (11-0) trailed for most of the game, including 7-5 going into the fourth quarter, and needed some late-game heroics to pull out the win. Brenden Mooney led Laconia with six goals, including the game-winner, and Jordan Audet had three goals and two assists.

With four games left in the regular season, the Sachems should end up with the No. 1 seed in Division III and look like they could head into the playoffs unbeaten. Laconia finishes the year with games at ConVal (7-3), vs. Lebanon (4-6), at Coe-Brown (2-8) and at Keene (1-12).
