BEDFORD - On a day where there was little room for the Alvirne High School boys soccer team to work on offense, senior Matt Lubinski knew the Broncos had to take advantage of every opportunity they got.

Lubinski did just that, first with 18 minutes left in Friday's game at Bedford, and again, just 49 seconds into overtime to give Alvirne a 2-1 win over the Bulldogs in a Division I contest.

The two goals by Lubinski helped Alvirne improve to 11-3 and helped the Broncos bounce back from a tough, double overtime loss to Timberlane on Tuesday.

"It was good to rebound after that tough overtime loss," Lubinski said. "It was huge. It's a big confidence builder. We have two more tough games, so it should be a big help."

Alvirne finishes the regular season with home games against Hanover (10-3-1) on Oct. 21 and Concord (10-3-1) on Oct. 24, part of a grueling four-game stretch going into the postseason.

"(The win) was big, knowing that when we looked at the last four games before (the playoffs) we had four quality teams," Alvirne coach Jeff Blackwell said. "We started off with a loss, and to get a second one, knowing you still have two to go would have been very difficult, I think. Fortunately, we don't have to think about it."

For Bedford, it was another close call in a season full of them, as the Bulldogs (6-5-3) played their eighth overtime game of the season. Bedford has also played to ties with Hanover and Concord, but is just 1-3-3 in its last seven games.

"We're heartened we’re competitive with the top teams and we know no one wants to play us in the playoffs because we'll be tough to break down," Bedford coach Stuart Pepper said. "We made it hard for them (Alvirne) to break us down, and they really didn't have that many openings. We were disappointed because the two goals we conceded were lapses in concentration."

On the first goal, Lubinski went through two defenders, including turning around Bedford's Brian Gould twice before getting a shot past goalie Josh Reeks. The shot was deflected on the way in, but still had enough on it to get to the net.

"I got the ball played in from Nate (Gosselin) and (Gould) was right on my back, so I turned in," Lubinski said. "I think I put the ball between his legs, and as he was cutting in, I cut back outside and just slid it in."

But Bedford came back and tied the game up less than six minutes later, when Josh Bauer headed in a corner kick by Michael Kitsis with 12:22 left in the game.

"We had a letdown on our marking on the corner kick," Blackwell said. "You could call it whatever, but we had somebody not staying with their marks. When there's one, there's often enough a second and third because they're trying to adjust. It was sloppy."

While the goal was rewarding for the Bulldogs, having Bauer playing up may have proven costly in overtime.

"The fact is that Josh Bauer, he's our best defender, but we put him at midfield (Friday) because he's our best threat," Pepper said. "We have this crazy conundrum, what do we do with Josh. With the second goal, had Josh been there, it probably wouldn't have happened. At the same time, we gambled and thought we might as well go for it."

After Bedford made the initial push in overtime, the Broncos got the ball and moved quickly down the field, setting up Lubinski's winner, which Reeks again got a piece of as it went into the net.

"We needed to put one in quick and any shot counts because we really didn't get to test the keeper much," Lubinski said. "I just turned quick and shot when I had the chance to."
