LONDONDERRY - It's been a blue print the Londonderry High School girls basketball team has followed several times this season.

Make some adjustments at halftime and put them into affect successfully in the third quarter on the way to a win.

The Lancers did just that Tuesday night, using an 11-2 run to open the second half to create separation on the way to a 46-33 win over Windham in a Division I game.

While the run was more about Londonderry's offense figuring out the best way to beat the Jaguars' zone defense, the Lancers (13-2) ended the game leaning on their defense, holding Windham to just one point in the fourth quarter.

"That’s happened a couple of times, where we’ve had a really good third quarter and gotten into ourselves, been able to move the ball better," Londonderry coach Jon Doherty said. "It was good, finding some scoring and making some adjustments. The zone is tricky and we’ve been prepping for a couple of days.

"We had a hard time following the game plan, but at the end of the day, we were able to adjust at halftime and do the things that we needed to do and move on, which was good."

Sammie Sullivan led Londonderry with 17 points, 11 of which came in the first half, while Brooke Eacrett had all nine of her points in the second half. Kate Sloper chipped in with 10 markers and Gemma Murray added two 3-pointers.

Windham (9-6) got nine points each from Kate Carboni and Meghan Husson, with Carboni adding 14 rebounds and Husson grabbing six boards and dishing out five assists. Lilah Boucher added eight points, including two 3s.

But it was the fourth loss in five games for the Jaguars, and in three of those, they've scored fewer than 40 points.

"I think our M.O. is that our defense is what keeps us in the game," Windham coach Cassie Turcotte said. "First half, our defense was really disruptive. I think Londonderry came out of halftime with some adjustments. We had to answer that and we weren’t finding the answers right away. Their defense had changed and our players were having a hard time finding an open shot."

Although Londonderry led for most of the first half - Windham had a 0ne-point lead in each quarter - the game was back-and-forth.

The game was stopped with about two minutes left in the first quarter when the water jug next to the Jaguars' bench was knocked over and water and ice threatened to run onto the floor. Play resumed as the spill was cleaned up and everyone on Windham's bench had to stand for the rest of the quarter and well into the second.

The Lancers led 15-10 at the end of one, but the Jaguars outscored them 8-2 to take an 18-17 lead with 4:20 remaining in the half. A 3-pointer by Murray put Londonderry up 25-20 with 1:16 left in the half, but Boucher answered it in the final minute to make it a two-point game at the half.

Londonderry opened the third with back-t0-back baskets by Eacrett and Windham took an early timeout. Sullivan and Paige Carboni traded baskets, but Sloper hit a 3 and Sullivan added a jumper to give the Lancers a 36-25 lead.

Windham's offense picked up in the final minutes of the quarter, with a buzzer-beating basket by Husson cutting Londonderry's lead to 40-32 going into the fourth.

But the Lancers' defense stepped up from there and the Jaguars struggled to make shots.

"We have been priding ourselves on defense all year," Doherty said. "That’s been our main identity."

Windham missed a handful of layups and was 1 for 8 at the line in the quarter, and finished 4 of 12 for the game.

"When it comes down to it, making layups and making our foul shots would have been really helpful," Turcotte said. "Londonderry is a strong program, they’re at the top of the standings. The fact that we were able to stay in it and compete with them, I mean, nothing matters until the playoffs. We learn what works and what didn’t work. We have plenty of practices left until our prelim game."
