DERRY – Sophomore Gemma Murray was given the task to guard recent Pinkerton Academy's 1,000-point scorer Sydney Gerossie entering Londonderry High School’s girls basketball rivalry matchup against the Astros on Friday.

Murray did her job on her defensive assignment and complemented Londonderry’s leading scorer Sammie Sullivan for a rivalry victory that kept the Lancers undefeated.

Gerossie was averaging 17.9 points a game, but Murray limited her to 11 points on Friday while scoring 18 points of her own during Londonderry’s 56-45 victory inside Hackler Gymnasium.

“I felt like I started off not that good but once I figured how to play and guard against her I think I did pretty good,” Murray said. “She’s a really good player and is really hard to guard but I think I did pretty good.”

Londonderry (9-0) also possesses a recent 1,000-point scorer of its own after Sullivan eclipsed the mark during a 78-31 win over Goffstown on Jan. 21\. The senior scored 19 points to lead the way on Friday and is averaging 20.2 points a game midway through this season.

Sullivan was happy to get the milestone out of the way and focus on the special season that the Lancers are enjoying.

“It was a relief. I was super excited and everyone was so supportive, but just getting that off my back I can focus on the season and try to get as far as we can,” Sullivan said. “The environment was awesome, (Pinkerton) played a great game and it was a really tough matchup and I’m just really happy to come out on top.”

Londonderry coach Jon Doherty felt Murray’s defense on Gerossie plus Sullivan’s will in the second half played a major difference in the outcome.

“I thought Gemma Murray shifted the way she was guarding Syd and she threw her off a little bit,” Doherty said. “(Sullivan) then took over. She is a fantastic player. Her and Gemma, the combination of the two of them are both levels above a lot of people. I am very thankful to have them both.”

Pinkerton (10-2) used a 14-5 run at the end of the second quarter to close to within a 26-25 halftime deficit that extended to the Astros trailing 39-38 entering the fourth quarter.

Londonderry’s Reagan Anderson began the final frame with a 3-pointer before the Lancers put the game away with four consecutive 3-pointers from Brooke Eacrett, Sullivan, Mia Giampa and Murray to give Londonderry a 54-41 cushion.

“Shooting is our strong point I would say,” Sullivan said. “We have a bunch of good shooters on the team, so we know how to kick and look for them. It’s just working as a team and we started to connect.”

Pinkerton coach Lani Buskey said her team ran out of responses once the Lancers started hitting their stride. The Astros came into the game on a six-game winning streak.

“They got hot and we didn’t have the best shot selection on the offensive end,” Buckley said. “We started deviating from the game plan and every time we forced it, unfortunately that created a really great opportunity for them.”

There is no rest in competition for Londonderry next week as it will host Windham (11-1) on Tuesday and travel to Concord Christian (9-2) next Saturday.

“I like what we're at, I like what I’m seeing,” Doherty said. “We’re much more resilient this year than we’ve been in years past. They don’t get rattled and they want to keep going.”
