BEDFORD - The Londonderry High School boys lacrosse team was cruising.

Up 4-1 over Bedford after one quarter Saturday, the Lancers were dictating play, controlling possession, and finding ways to score. And then all of sudden, they weren't.

Londonderry went almost two full quarters without a goal, while Bedford chipped away at the lead, eventually tying it late in the third quarter. And that woke the Lancers up, as they went on a methodical 5-0 run to take control of the game, beating the Bulldogs 10-6 in a Division I game.

Hunter Smith (assist) and Cole Duarte each had three goals for Londonderry (5-3, No. 5 in the NHHSS Coaches Poll), while Isaac McCune added two goals and two assists. Zac Fawcett had a goal and an assist and Brandon Savage also scored, while Robby Derhak, Aiden O'Loughlin and Jack Kester each had an assist.

"It was a big win for us," McCune said. "It shows we’re a real contender. We can fight. It felt good to have the early lead, but obviously, we thought we were going to win it right there and then, and we took a few plays off. That cost us a few goals and brought it close."

Bedford (7-2, No. 6) made things interesting late, scoring back-to-back goals in 37 seconds to make it a 9-6 game with 1:44 to play, but Londonderry was able to stop any comeback there.

"I was getting nervous," Londonderry goalie Dane Duarte said. "They poured in a couple of goals real quickly."

Dane Duarte, a sophomore and younger brother of Cole, was making just his third varsity start and finished with 11 saves, six of which came in the second quarter, when Bedford started to get back into the game. The Lancers keeper was able to help his team take a 4-2 lead into halftime.

"He is making some crazy saves," Londonderry coach Roger Sampson said. "My message to my goalies, and I’m sure all lacrosse coaches say the same, you’ve got to stop the long shots. If you can do that, great. If they’re scoring inside of 10 feet, that’s the defense’s fault. If you can make that save, we’ll take it. He’s a head’s up kid. He’s pretty solid fundamentally as a sophomore."

With Londonderry's offense struggling in the second quarter, Dane Duarte realized the defense needed to step up and it started with him.

"I realized that we weren’t scoring at that point and I had to rise up and give us a chance," he said. "The pressure came on and we seem to do better under pressure."

The Bulldogs got two goals from Will Kramer and a goal and an assist from Max Manniello. Derek Greer, Connor Arbusto and Magnus Steele also had goals for Bedford while Matt Desmond made 13 saves.

"The possession time, if you look at theirs versus ours, it’s definitely lopsided," Bedford coach Matt Johansmeyer said. "We had trouble clearing the ball. Their goalie played unbelievable."

Johnny McKinnon was filling in on faceoffs for Londonderry and held his own against Bedford's Owen Roberto and Steele, helping the Lancers win half the faceoffs. After Kramer scored to tie the game with 4:58 left in the third, Roberto won the faceoff, but the Bulldogs threw the ball away.

With possession and a sense of urgency back, Londonderry went to work, moving the ball around until O'Loughlin found McCune near the crease, and the senior beat Desmond on high on the short side.

The Lancers took the 5-4 lead into the fourth quarter and Smith stretched it to two goals just 47 seconds into the final frame. Fawcett scored with 6:43 remaining to make it 7-4 and McCune added another with 4:12 to go.

"We were taking time on our possessions and getting the smart shots," Smith said of Londonderry's run. "We came out hard and thought we had it, but they played hard, too. That’s the first time we’ve seen it this year. We’ve got to keep the same energy we came out with and never let that go."

Jesse Morin was called for a slash with 3:14 remaining, giving Bedford a manup opportunity, but Dane Duarte came up with a save and turned it into a transition goal, with Smith scoring at the other end.

"We had a couple of breakdowns that cost us two quick goals and then it as 4-4," Sampson said. "We’re making some dopey mistakes and it’s going to cost us. This game is far from over, we need to refocus and get some good possession time in the zone and look for the good shots. If there’s a fast break, take it, but I’m looking for good, fundamental play. It didn’t happen quickly, but we were able to get the edge."
