MERRIMACK - For most of the school year, Owen Huard is in his metals class at Londonderry High School on a late Monday morning.

Not during spring vacation week. Huard and his Londonderry boys lacrosse teammates were at Merrimack, taking on the Tomahawks instead.

After a bit of a slow start that saw the Lancers trailing by two at halftime, Londonderry's offense woke up in the third quarter and the defense held off a late Merrimack charge for a 9-8 win in a Division I contest.

The Lancers (3-1) outscored the Tomahawks 4-0 in the third, turning a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 lead that they stretched to a 9-6 advantage with just under five minutes remaining.

Two goals by Merrimack (4-3, No. 7 in the MerchSquared.com/NHHSSports Coaches Poll) in the final two minutes made it a one-goal game, but a turnover by the Tomahawks in the final seconds allowed Londonderry to hold on for the win.

"That was a tough one," first-year Londonderry coach Jimmy Ward said. "That’s my closest game as a head coach. Back and forth for a while, and they had it for a while. Offensively, we stalled for a little bit, and then we came back. And then they came back."

Huard four goals and an assist to lead Londonderry while Brody Campbell and Odin Delorey added two goals apiece. Aidan Stowell also had a goal and Colby Walden added two assists while Broch St. Gelais finished with 11 saves.

But the Lancers trailed 3-1 at the end of one, and after two goals from Huard tied it at 3 in the second quarter, the Tomahawks got two goals in 42 seconds to go back up by two before halftime.

"We’re on vacation, so we’re all just trying to wake up," Huard said of the first half. "Our bench got hyped and we played how we usually play. We just had to get their heads turned. Moving the ball quickly was for sure what we had to do."

And at the other end, Ward felt Londonderry just needed to be a little more patient.

"Defensively, we pushed out a little too far in the beginning, but once we settled in, we played our game, it was much better," the coach said. "Out of the half, we decided to just stay back and play our game, let them come to us. We gave them a few easy ones trying to push out and they beat us one-on-one. We weren’t really expecting that."

Merrimack got two goals apiece from Hudson Rousseau (one assist) and Henry Tobin while Gavin Hickey, Gabe Gorman (one assist), Cayden Dine and Sean Anderson had a goal apiece.

Max Giles dished out three assists for the Tomahawks and Mason Tremblay had eight saves.

"I thought Londonderry played a great game," Merrimack coach Brian Miller said. "They’re well-coached and they did a great job, and we did not play a good second half.

"You’d like to think having a lead going into the second half, I thought things were working, and we just did not play well. We didn’t clear the ball well. We had some unforced turnovers at the end of the game. That’s just not good."

Huard scored 1:30 into the third quarter to cut Merrimack's lead to one and Campbell tied the game midway through the frame. Less than two minutes later, Huard gave Londonderry the lead for good and Delorey scored with 13 seconds left to make it 7-5 Lancers going to the fourth.

"I think we got lost on a couple of slides," Miller said. "Our transition game was not great. Offensively, we couldn’t possess. We were taking the first look instead of holding the ball and seeing what we’ve got."

Tobin got Merrimack back within one 21 seconds into the final quarter, but Delorey and Stowell gave Londonderry its largest lead. Stowell's goal made it 9-6 with 4:48 to play.

The Tomahawks were to get and keep possession for stretches the rest of the way, with Anderson making it a two-goal game with 1:51 to play. Merrimack had a manup opportunity moments later, but turned the ball over.

Londonderry gave it back with 48.8 seconds to play and Tobin scored to cut the lead to one with 20.3 remaining. Merrimack won the faceoff, but an errant pass led to an over-and-back call, giving the Lancers possession to run out the clock.
