The Cardinals ruled the start and end of the game with their hustle, forcing turnovers for extra scoring opportunities. Meanwhile, the Lancers' size and shooting kept them in the game and gave them the 58-57 win, their first of the season. “We really needed a win,” Londonderry coach Jaryd Piecuch. “It was a nice Christmas gift.” The victory seemed secured as the Lancers went up seven points at 53-46 with just under two minutes to go in the game. The Cardinals then turned on the full court press. After cutting the lead to five, BG’s Connor McGowen made the steal and found Sam Woodward down the court for the open 3, making the score 53-51. A few possessions later, down 56-52 after BG missed a free throw, Jeremiah Figaro got a steal near BG’s hoop and quickly found McGowen for the layup to make it a one-possession game. With Londonderry attempting to inbound, a BG defender came around to tip the pass out of bounds. Initially, the referees believed the ball went off the nearest Lancer, but after further discussion, they changed the call and gave the ball to Londonderry. With only a few seconds left, BG had no other choice but to foul right away. Jameson Seaman sunk the two free throws to put the Lancers up 58-54\. Seaman went 6 for 6 on free throws in the fourth quarter and finished the day with 11 points. Those final makes turned out to be crucial as BG’s Logan Lowney heaved a last-second shot from half court that went in. “We were able to get to the rim on their pressure,” Piecuch said. “And those free throws proved to be important with that half-court shot.” The Cardinals dictated the pace of the first quarter thanks to their pressure on defense, forcing 10 turnovers in the opening quarter. McGowan scored six of his 17 points in the opening frame as BG led 19-7 going into the second quarter. For the rest of the game, Londonderry switched to a zone defense that gave BG trouble. Between the second and third quarters, the Cardinals only managed 29 points. “We showed more energy when we went to the zone,” Piecuch said. “Guys were moving and their hands were up. We have a lot of length. We installed it two days ago and they guys picked it up.” The Cardinals struggled to break the zone and had a hard time getting their outside shots to fall. They started the third quarter 1 for 7 from the field and got very few looks inside. Even during the final minutes, the Cardinals couldn’t get the big shot they needed to tie the game. “At the end of the day, it’s a make or miss game,” BG head coach Will Horne said. “We had some great looks. The kids absolutely battled. We got to get some shots to fall at the end of the day.” The speed BG showed on defense early disappeared as Londonderry’s offense began to click. The Lancers only turned the ball over twice in the second quarter and closed the gap to 29-22 at halftime. Piecuch told his team as long as they limited the turnovers, they had a good chance to get back in the game. They continued to control the ball in the third quarter as they narrowed the deficit to four going into the final frame. The Lancers also began to find center Tyler Miles as the game went on. The 6-5 big man scored a game-high 18 points while grabbing 13 rebounds. “When he gets the ball, it’s tough to move him,” Piecuch said. “I think there might be only one other kid in NH who is the same size." Outside of McGowen, no other player made more than three shots from the field for BG. The Cardinals will look to pick up their second win against Nashua South after the New Year. Meanwhile, Londonderry will take on the defending-champion Bedford Bulldogs.
