CONCORD - Dennis Reilly gets excited whenever Abe Pearson has the ball.

The Lebanon High School boys lacrosse coach doesn't always know what's going to happen, but more often than not, it's something good for the Raiders.

Late in the fourth quarter of Wednesday's Division III preliminary round game against Bishop Brady, Lebanon needed something good.

Pearson delivered with what proved to be the game-winning goal, scoring just 22 seconds after the No. 7 Giants had tied the game, and the No. 10 Raiders added an insurance goal in the final two minutes to take a 9-7 win, their first in the postseason since 2021.

"You never count Abe out of a game," Reilly said. "If we’re close, you know that he’s going to do something to get a goal. (Going into Wednesday) he had 51 goals this year. Every time he has the ball, I don’t know what he’s going to do, but I’m pretty excited."

The win puts Lebanon (9-6) in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2022, the Raiders' last playoff appearance, where they will face No. 2 Plymouth (12-2) at 5 p.m. Saturday on the road.

Pearson finished with three goals and two assists while V.J. Sites had three assists and scored with 1:59 remaining to put Lebanon up by two goals. Bentley Lang and Evan George added two goals apiece and Benji Madory also had a goal and an assist.

Logan Mason finished with 11 saves for the Raiders and bounced back from a tough showing a week ago against Bishop Brady to factor in the win. The teams played eight days prior, with the Giants getting a 12-11 win on a last-second score.

"They had 12 goals on 16 shots," Reilly said. "(Wednesday) he was there. (Mason) kept us in the game. Without his work, we would have been in big trouble. That was important."

Pearson agreed with his coach, crediting Mason for his performance.

"Our goalie played hard (last week), but there were shots that went around screens, some unlucky shots," the junior said. "We were red hot coming off a couple of good wins. We had lost to these guys by one goal three years in a row. We were trying to get some vengeance."

The Raiders had won six of eight entering the playoffs and carried that into the game, jumping out to an early lead. It was a one-goal game midway through the second quarter when Pearson and Lang scored less than two minutes apart to give Lebanon a 6-3 lead it carried into halftime.

Joey Richardson (two goals, one assist) got one goal back just 24 seconds into the second half but George answered to make it 7-4 with 9:05 remaining in the third quarter.

Although the Raiders wouldn't score again for more than 19 minutes, their defense was keeping the Giants in check. Bishop Brady scored a man-down goal in transition to make it 7-5 Lebanon with 6:11 left in the third quarter and that was still the score midway through the fourth.

But Drake Bekar (three goals) added on two more man-down goals just 1:15 apart to tie the game 7-7 with 4:53 remaining.

"We gave up three shorthanded goals," Reilly said. "We just broke down. It’s one of those deals where we practice it all the time, but we saw it coming."

Lebanon won the ensuing faceoff, and with the Raiders still a manup, Pearson went right to work.

"I got it low wing, which I’m used to playing in that position," he said. "Sometimes defenders take bold approaches, they come out a little bit. My guy didn’t come out too much, but I went into him a little bit. Since he gave that pressure back, I was able to get under the head of his stick, and then he was chasing.

"I worked to get to the middle of the field so I had a good angle for finishing. I ducked my head a little so the goalie would think I was shooting low and thankfully it went in."

With 4:21 to play, the Raiders were back in front, but the Giants were able to get possession off the faceoff. Alex King took a low shot from outside and Mason got down to make the save, and with 1:59 to play, Sites scored to make it 9-7.

Bishop Brady was able to get the ball back with time to cut into the lead, but a shot missed the cage and Mason chased the shot to give the Raiders possession with 57 seconds left.

"Last year, we were 3-13 and we lost five games by one goal, so I saw the potential," Reilly said. "They have to learn how to win. They’re not used to that and they’re starting to believe it. No one has been on the team for four years. Once they realized they have the skills, it’s really clicked. They’re coming together and they’re peaking at the right time."
