LONDONDERRY - This year's version of the Winnacunnet High School field hockey team is one of the youngest that Heidi Hand can remember having.

So when the Warriors had controlled play for most of the first half of Monday's game, and then saw Londonderry score the game's first goal just 36 seconds into the second half, she wondered how exactly the players would respond.

Winnacunnet held up on defense over the next few minutes before countering with an offensive surge of its own, as the Warriors scored five unanswered goals on the way to a 5-1 victory over the Lancers in a Division I game.

Hayden Adams led the way with three goals for Winnacunnet (4-1), including what proved to be the game-winner with a little more than a minute remaining in the third quarter. That goal put the Warriors up 2-1 and swung momentum going into the final 15 minutes.

"I was nervous because it’s such a young team, when they scored first on us, I wondered how are going to react," Hand said. "Are we going to hold our heads down? To see this team grow each game, they’re bringing something new. They don’t give up. They’re not going to let up. They’re still going to give their all.

"When it was 2-1, I was still not settled. When we started to get that momentum, we got a couple more and it was like here we go. It never felt like we had the game until there was about six minutes left."

Abby Wilber added a goal and an assist and Grace Vander Els also scored while Hannah Ritchie had two assists and Marissa Abraham made three saves. The Warriors finished with seven penalty corners, but none led to a goal.

Four of those corners came in the first half, as Winnacunnet kept the ball on Londonderry's side of the field for long stretches, but couldn't capitalize.

Londonderry (0-3-1) took advantage of its best chance to that point right out of halftime, getting the ball down field quickly before Rease St. Gelais tipped the ball past Abraham to Megan Daileanes to give the Lancers a 1-0 lead with 14:24 remaining in the third quarter.

The goal gave the Lancers momentum and they were awarded their only corner of the game moments later. The Warriors were able to clear the ball, but it looked like Londonderry would make it 2-0 when Daileanes and St. Gelais went into the circle on a 2-on-none.

But Daileanes pass took a bad bounce and hit off St. Gelais, ending the scoring chance for Londonderry. Winnacunnet went right back down the field, and moments later, Vander Els tied the game by putting a rebound by Lancers goalie Kathryn Martin (nine saves) with 6:27 left in the quarter.

"If maybe we had put the ball in on that breakaway, it might have been a different story," Londonderry coach Nichole Treadway said. "The momentum might have swung the other way, but you don’t know. I feel like once they put in that second goal, the momentum for us just really slowed down, and that’s been a problem for us. We get scored on and we let up. We proved that we can play with that team. We had opportunities, we played really well, and something happened. That’s not a skill thing."

For the next 14 minutes, Winnacunnet didn't let up, getting a couple of corners and putting shots on goal before Adams finally broke the tie at the end of the quarter. The sophomore added another goal with 9:38 left to make it 3-1 and Wilbur scored just 1:33 later, when she blasted a shot that hit off Martin and went into the goal.

Adams got her third goal with 7:32 remaining to give the Warriors a four-goal lead.

"I was a little speechless after the way we played the fourth quarter," Treadway said. "I thought we played a great first three quarters. I said to the girls, there is something missing, and it’s not skill. We have to figure it out as a team. I think we let up, big time, in the fourth quarter. I’m kind of at a loss, because I was so proud of how they worked in the first three quarters, and then to give up like that in the fourth was frustrating."
