WINDHAM - The Dover High School boys lacrosse team had to change something up defensively Friday against Windham

After giving up an average of 3.3 goals through the first six games of the season, the Green Wave went into halftime not only down a goal, but having allowed eight to the Jaguars in the first two quarters.

Dover mixed up a few matchups on defense, moved a couple of guys around, and got some key saves when needed, as the Green Wave held Windham to just three goals in the second half and pulled away with a late run for a 14-11 win over the Jaguars in a Division II game.

Cam Lent led the Green Wave (7-0) with four goals while John Colizzi (three assists) and Kyle Ferriero added three goals each and Dom Silverio also had two goals and an assist.

With the game tied at 11 with under six minutes to play, Silverio, Colizzi and Ferriero each had a goal as Dover ended the game on a 3-0 run and kept the ball away from the Jaguars (6-3). Ryan Long and Andrew Housley also had a goal apiece and Noah Schwartz made 10 saves, including back-to-back ones in the third quarter that helped swing momentum.

"This Windham team is good," Dover coach John Silverio said. "What we did was change up some of the matchups with our guys. We moved some guys around and we know they have some nice kids who like to dodge and shoot. We tried to lock off those guys and make it harder for them. I like how we changed it up."

Tyler Folsom led Windham with five goals - all of which came in the game's first 13 minutes - and an assist. Noah Rust added two goals and three assists and Leo Piandes had a goal and two helpers while Jake Rust, Niko Piandes and Alek Tunik had a goal and an assist each.

"I know that my offense can score," Windham coach Joe Young said. "I’m not worried about that, however, the defense, there was a couple of mental mistakes. Not communicating, not moving their feet, that was the difference."

Both teams came out firing after the start of the game was delayed after Dover's bus got lost on the way to Windham. The teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter, as each side held a one-goal lead twice.

It was 5-5 after one quarter and Folsom scored 46 seconds into the second to give Windham a 6-5 lead, but Dover responded to tie it on Long's goal less than a minute later.

The Jaguars took their largest led on back-to-back man-up goals, the second of which made it 8-6 with 3:48 left until halftime, but Colizzi scored with 1:51 remaining to get Dover within one at the break.

A Windham penalty at the end of the half gave the Green Wave possession to start the third and Dover capitalized on the man-up, as Dom Silverio scored to tie the game 22 seconds into the third. Housley then scored 1:31 after that to give the Green Wave a 9-8 lead.

"We kept battling," John Silverio said. "We try to tell the guys, there are certain things you can control and there are things that you can’t. The things you can’t (control), you can’t get caught up in. You try to give them a lesson for real life situation. The bus ride situation, to the man-down situation, for our offense to keep generating against a good defensive team, that builds character."

Jake Rust tied the game at 9 with 9:01 remaining in the third, and although Windham had the ball for a long stretch in the quarter - the Jaguars took 10 shots in the third - that was the only goal the Jaguars would get.

With time running out in the quarter, Schwartz made two straight saves, the second of which he was able to clear, setting up a goal by Ferriero at the other end that put Dover up 10-9 going into the fourth quarter.

"Huge goal," John Silverio said. "That got us going again."

It was one of a handful of swings that Young felt the Jaguars couldn't overcome.

"There’s a couple of extra break downs, they capitalize on them, and then the emotional tide is going the other way," he said. "That emotional piece is involved in anything they’re doing out there."

A Dover penalty early in the fourth gave Windham another man-up opportunity and Noah Rust scored to tie the game 10-10 with 1:45 gone off the clock in the quarter. The teams traded goals one more time, with Rust scoring another man-up goal to knot it at 11 with 7:26 to go.

The Jaguars won the faceoff but a turnover and an offside penalty helped set up a goal by Dom Silverio to give Dover a 12-11 lead with 5:45 to play. The Green Wave won the faceoff and Colizzi scored to make it a two-goal game with 3:33 to go.

Dover got another faceoff win, and after a timeout, Ferriero scored to extend the lead to 14-11 with 2:01 to play. From there, Dover's defense was able to hang on and Schwartz made a save late to keep Windham from getting closer.
