BEDFORD – Derek Geddes had a simple message Wednesday for the Bedford High School softball team.

Keep doing what you’re doing, Geddes told his players before the Bulldogs came up to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning in a tie game with Alvirne.

Bedford did just that, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring four times to come away with a 10-6 victory over the Broncos.

Alvirne threatened to rally for fourth time in the top of the seventh, putting two runners on, but Bedford’s Jillian Saltzman was able to escape the inning and get the win for Bedford. Saltzman got the win pitching two innings in relief of starter Kelly Woodmansee.

Christina Bonfiglio led Bedford’s offense, going 2 for 4 with four RBIs, while Kelsey Murphy was 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Ashley Abad went 3 for 3, drove in two runs and scored three more.

The win snapped a two-game skid for the Bulldogs (7-4), who dropped a one-run game at Alvirne on Friday and lost in 11 innings against Pinkerton on Monday.

“I think we rebounded (Wednesday) against a really good team,” Geddes said. “It’s great to see, especially once we were able to get the bats moving.”

The Broncos (7-5) got a big game from Chelsey Drew, who went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run that gave Alvirne its only lead of the game, 4-2 in the top of the third inning. Jenna Giannelli, Kaycee Carbone and Erin Craven were each 2 for 4.

Giannelli took the loss for Alvirne, going six innings and allowing all 10 runs on nine hits and six walks with five strikeouts. Four of those Bedford hits came in the sixth inning, and the Bulldogs were also aided by two Alvirne errors and a walk.

“We did a lot of things right,” Alvirne coach Sarah Brisk said. “We hit the ball hard, Jenna Giannelli pitched a very good, but unfortunately, we made some errors and had one bad inning.”

The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the first, as Abad and Alexandra Haskell drew two-out walks and scored on a double by Kelsey Murphy.

Alvirne rallied in the third, when Haleigh Cote and Mikayla Powlowsky both reach on errors and scored, the later on a triple by Giannelli. Drew followed with a shot to center field that just made it over the fence and put the Broncos up by two.

But Bedford came back in the bottom of the inning. Kelsey Kennedy reached on a error, Woodmansee walked and Abad singled to score Kennedy to make it 4-3\. Giannelli was able to retire Haskell and Murphy, but Bonfiglio doubled to drive in Woodmansee and Abad to put the Bulldogs on top 5-4.

Alvirne tied the game in the top of the fourth on a RBI single by Powlowsky, but Bedford scored a single run on a groundout by Bonfiglio in the fifth to retake the lead. The Bulldogs could have had more, loading the bases with no one out, but Giannelli battled out of the inning.

The Broncos tied the game again in the top of the sixth, this time on a RBI single by Carbone, but the tie wouldn’t last long.

“I kept it simple,” Geddes said. “We’ve been getting hits all game long, let’s just keep it going. That was pretty much it. The girls knew they were having good at bats, they were making good contact, and we were being selective at the plate. Keep on doing what you’re doing.”

Both teams are in action on Friday, as Bedford travels to Londonderry (7-5) and Alvirne hosts Concord (10-1).
