After missing out on a handful of opportunities to do just that throughout the second half Wednesday, the Astros finally did, with little time to spare. Lauren Lisauskas was able to bury a loose ball into the back of the goal with 39 seconds left in regulation to give Pinkerton a 2-1 win over Bishop Guertin in a Division I game at Stellos Stadium. Kate Bennett also scored for the Astros (5-0), giving them a 1-0 lead in the final moments of the first half, while Emma Johnston had an assist and Khaliyah Ellis made seven saves. The game-winning goal came after Bishop Guertin (2-2) had made a rush of its own before Pinkerton was able to regain possession. Marley Mailloux sent the ball into the circle, where it bounced around and appeared to get deflected by Cardinals goalie Makenna Reekie before it ended up going to Lisauskas. "It was a ping-pong kind of a thing," Littlefield said. "We practice keeping our sticks down and just throwing shots, even if we don’t necessarily know where they’re going. But having that sense of where the net is at least and throwing it toward the net, and Lauren a few times earlier, swung and missed those balls. She was confident and knew that she can’t swing, she had to stop it and get it in. In that moment, it was about settling down and remembering what she's supposed to do, Lisauskas added. "We’ve really been working on capitalizing on those and all game we’d been waiting for an opportunity like that," Lisauskas said. "If it comes from my teammates. I have to be there and back them up and finish for them, kind of do my job." The goal came at the end of a half that saw Pinkerton control possession, as the Astros put six shots on goal - Reekie, who came in at halftime, made five saves - and get six penalty corners. The Cardinals were able to get opportunities of their own, including a rush by Rylee Bouvier that ended when Ellis came out of the goal and knocked the Bishop Guertin sophomore down. The Cardinals were awarded a penalty stroke and Sarah Coyle converted to tie the game 1-1 with 19:56 to play. But Bishop Guertin had just one corner in the second half and was only able to put three shots on Ellis (seven saves) in the second half. "We made more of our opportunities, but we couldn’t finish," Bishop Guertin coach Steve Duprat said. "It’s something we’ve got to correct. Pinkerton is a good team. They’re right at the top and I think they’re going to pressuring to win a championship. "To know that we’re there and competing, it’s a good takeaway for us, but I’d rather have the victory. We’re still a young team and hopefully as the season goes on, we pick up some of these close games." The Astros return home Friday to face undefeated Windham (4-0) at 4 p.m. while the Cardinals go on the road Saturday to play Bedford at 12:15 p.m.
