The Marauders only put three shots on goal; turned out they only needed two of them. Second-seeded Hanover scored twice in the second half, with the game-winner coming off the foot of Eric Jayne in the 77th minute, to beat No. 4 Bedford 2-1 and capture its sixth-consecutive championship Sunday at Southern New Hampshire University. The title is Hanover’s first Division II crown after winning the last five Class I titles, and the Marauders have now won 17 boys soccer championships. Ben Harris also scored for Hanover (17-1) and Forrest Pratt assisted on both goals. Matt Cote scored Bedford’s only goal at 24:48 of the second half, tying the game at 1 and paving the way for an exciting finish. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bc/58/bc5866d0-9fd9-4113-b959-670d6f16471d/content/images/www-nh-highschoolsports-com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/bhsboyssoccer1107-1-bhs182.jpg "BHSboyssoccer1107-1 BHS18&2") “It was a great game to watch,” Bedford coach Stuart Pepper said. “I don’t think we could have done any more or played any better or left anything out there than we did. It was a quality performance by our boys and I think we met our match. “In many ways, we controlled the game and I thought we played the purer soccer. They are an unbelievably formidable opponent. They were a bit livelier in the penalty box on both goals. Twice in 80 minutes, we got caught on our heels a little bit.” Bedford (16-3-1) had a handful of chances in both the first and second half, but each time something prohibited the Bulldogs from putting the ball in the goal. “They didn’t really hurt us and (goalie) Taylor (Wallace) didn’t have many shots to play,” Pepper said. “But when it mattered, they finished their chances. We had chances that we didn’t (finish). That’s the difference sometimes.” In the first half, Bedford had three corner kicks, but all three were batted out of harm’s way – the second two by Hanover goalie Stefan Dyroff – without the Bulldogs getting a touch. Bedford came close to getting the first score with under two minutes to go in the first half. Dyroff tried to knock away a ball that found its way into the box, but instead, it continued on toward the open goal. Hanover’s Hayden Pressey-Murray got back and headed the ball over the net to keep the game scoreless. Harris put the Marauders on the board in the 42nd minute, when his shot deflected off the underside of the crossbar and continued into the net. The goal seemed to deflate the Bulldogs just enough for Hanover to dictate play, but Bedford regrouped. Cote tied the game in the 55th minute when he got a step ahead of Hanover’s Robin Smith and sent a shot to the short side of Dyroff, who had guessed Cote would go to the far side, and into the net. ![](https://storage.ghost.io/c/bc/58/bc5866d0-9fd9-4113-b959-670d6f16471d/content/images/www-nh-highschoolsports-com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/bhsboyssoccer1107-1-bhs10-6.jpg "BHSboyssoccer1107-1 BHS10-6") “I was expecting it because we’ve been doing that all season,” Peppers said of the tying goal. “It’s a credit to our seniors, Danny Connelly, Matt Cote and Luke Olen, they were the players who led us. They’ve all grown up into young lads and made us into a team. Everybody talks about our quality youngsters (Bedford started five sophomores and a freshman), but without our seniors, they would have been half a team.” The Bulldogs almost took the lead immediately after the goal, when Cote once again had the ball and the defender beat inside the box. But this time, Dyroff came out and knocked the ball away before Cote could get a shot off. In the final 10 minutes, it was Bedford’s Erik Martel and Jayne trading near-makes. Martel put a shot just over the net and then sent another one right at Dyroff, while Jayne missed two shots just wide to the right. But on the third try, Jayne got one by Wallace with 2:34 to play for a 2-1 lead that would hold up. “Eric Jayne is a major player,” Pepper said. “We tried to contain him for 80 minutes and a couple of times, he got the better of us. That’s what happens when you play quality players.” It doesn’t hurt when the season ends every year with a championship, as it has for Jayne and the rest of the Hanover seniors. “They’re here every year and they know exactly what it’s about,” Pepper said. “They take in the occasion and deal with it. I thought we went out there and we didn’t show any nerves and I thought we were composed on the ball. Maybe the tournament experience matters. Jayne gets a half-chance in the box and he scores, where as our guys don’t quite take them. I’m sure we will in the future.” While the Bulldogs will lose some key seniors, they have a good portion of their lineup back next year. Pepper expects them to be ready for more when the time finally comes. “An occasion like this will make them want to come back for more,” he said. “Certainly, we’ve made a statement to the rest of the state. We’re a program to be reckoned with. If we’re not quite good enough, we will be.”
