The goal for the Bishop Guertin High School girls lacrosse team is simply to be the best team it can be this season.

After losing just four seniors from a team that won the Division I championship last year, it would seem the Cardinals are poised for a repeat performance in 2019, but the focus to start is on improving in the areas that need improvement.

"We’re always thinking about what we can do better," Bishop Guertin senior Grace Lambert said. "Last year, we were so happy to win the ’ship and that kind of just pushed us to work harder this year. Especially us seniors, we want to end the season the best we could possibly be."

If Bishop Guertin is to get back to the title game, Lambert will have a big part in it, as one of the captains and a key contributor among the seven defensive players returning for this season.

While she might be one of the shortest at her position, Lambert makes up for it in plenty of other ways and she focused on getting better in those areas during the offseason.

"I feel like I worked harder on my defensive skills because I feel strong about my stick work but I want to become stronger as a defender," she said. "I’m shorter than most typical defenders, so I want to make myself bigger and make myself more defensive minded.

"I work mostly on speed because I can be a fast person if I work hard. But also talking helps because no one will know if you don’t yell crash, or no one will know where the ball is if you’re not talking. On defense, it’s a big communication part because you need to know where the ball is."

Lambert has always been one of the more vocal girls on the team, according to coach Kerry Gobiel, something that helped make her stand out early on in her time on varsity.

"She’s always been really good at communication when she’s playing, and she has always been a really good cheerleader (for her teammates)," Gobiel said. "She is into motivating others positively, so that is helpful for our team.

"She has really excellent stick work and she’s also very fast. Those make up for height, for sure. Stick work is something she is always doing and that’s something you do outside of practice."

Lacrosse wasn't always Lambert's focus, however, as she started out playing tennis when she was younger. But in fifth grade, she made the switch to lacrosse, and last fall, after playing field hockey for a few years, Lambert joined the Bishop Guertin cross country team to try to help with her stamina.

"You need to know how to pace yourself," she said. "When I did cross country, that helped a lot with my stamina."

As much as she was looking forward to getting back on the field this spring, Lambert was longing to just be around her teammates for one final season before heading off to play in college at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va.

"It’s sad to think I’m leaving this team because I’ve been with them for four years," Lambert said. "But as a captain, I’m working to be a leader so I can push that through to freshman year of college. I won’t be a leader freshman year, but I can have other aspects of being a leader.

"It’s really nice being together as a team. We have new people, but it’s nice to get back to the groove of the spring. We’re getting to know the freshmen more and we get to mentor them more as we move through the season."
