LACONIA - Andy Paronto thought his Laconia High School boys lacrosse team played great Wednesday for the first quarter and a half.

With Stephen Towers in goal, the Sachems were able to survive playing less than that for stretches of the rest of the game.

No. 2 Laconia got out to a 6-0 lead through the first 18 minutes, and Towers and the Sachems defense were able to hold off No. 6 Monadnock enough the rest of the way for an 11-5 win in the Division III semifinals. The win sends Laconia to the title game for the second time in three years, where the Sachems will take on No. 1 Hopkinton, which beat No. 4 Plymouth in the other semifinal.

Riley Roy led the Laconia (15-1) offense with four goals and two assists while Parker Minor and Ryan Chiasson (assist) each had three goals. Bailey Moore also scored for the Sachems and Jacob Steele had two assists, but it was the 20 saves from Towers that might have been the biggest key to Laconia advancing.

"Steve Towers played awesome and he was making quick decisions off saves and it set up fastbreaks," Roy said. "We were just able to finish, so that helped us a lot. He was unreal. High shots, low shots, shots from two yards away. He’s the best goalie I’ve every played with.

"When he makes saves like that, the defenders I’m talking to are like ‘man that guy is filthy’ and I’m just like that’s Steve. He played awesome. He was a leader of the defense and that translated into the offense."

Laconia led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter and opened the second quarter with a 4-0 run, with three of the four goals starting with successful clears by Towers. The final three goals of that run came in a span of 58 seconds, leading to a Monadnock timeout with 6:14 left in the half.

"We established a pretty high level of play, especially in the first half," Paronto said. "I think we played a good quarter and a half to start the game and then we lost some energy after they took a timeout. Credit them, they’re a good team. They’re in the final four for a reason."

Monadnock (9-7) got three goals from Tim Hart while Dominick Dow and Chris Boucher had a goal apiece. Zack Morrell added two assists and Cullen Lloyd made eight saves.

But it was at the faceoff X that the Huskies were able to stay in the game, as they won 14 of 19 faceoffs, including all nine in the first half. When it was able to hold onto the ball, Monadnock extended possessions, including the first one to start the game, which last almost three full minutes.

"That’s one of the things they did a great job with," Paronto said of the faceoffs. "We’ve got to get our wings more involved, but I credit Monadnock. That’s one of the reasons they did well. We were able to overcome that. In the second half, we did better and that helped take the pressure of the defense and goalie."

Minor opened the scoring in the second half, giving Laconia a 7-1 lead just 48 seconds in, but Hart got his first of the game less than two minutes later to make it a five-goal game again. The Monadnock junior got another with 5:50 left in the quarter to make it 7-3, and after Minor scored with 19 seconds left, Boucher won the faceoff and answered just seven seconds later to make it an 8-4 game heading into the fourth.

"That’s playoff lacrosse, you’re not going to blow any team out," Roy said. "When we were up 6-0, that’s awesome, but you know that’s not going to last the whole game."

Laconia held a 9-5 lead in the fourth when back-to-back goals from Roy and Minor made it 11-5 with 2:18 left to play.

The Sachems will try to win their second title in three years when they face Hopkinton at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter. They lost to the Hawks 10-4 on May 9.
