Bedford players battle for a ground ball with a Bishop Guertin player during Wednesday's scrimmage.

NASHUA - When putting together the non-division portion of the schedule, coach Matt Guerard wanted to challenge his Bedford High School boys lacrosse team.

With the Bulldogs expected to make the jump to Division I next year, Guerard scheduled four regular season games against teams from the higher division.

But perhaps the game that will tell the Bulldogs the most took place Wednesday night, when Bedford traveled to Stellos Stadium in Nashua to scrimmage Bishop Guertin. While the Bulldogs came out on the wrong end of a 16-6 final, Guerard believes his team came out of the scrimmage with exactly what it needed.

"That was something that we were looking to get out of this game, something that exploited our weaknesses and our mistakes so we can move forward and get better," Guerard said. "A team like (Bishop Guertin) will definitely help us do that."

The game was scoreless for most of the first quarter, until the Cardinals got on the board with 3:24 left in the frame. That started a run of five goals in less than five minutes that gave Bishop Guertin a 5-1 lead.

"They get a run on you of two, three, four goals and you've got to stop the bleeding with something," Guerard said. "That's something that these guys are able to do with the lines that they run, they're just so deep that it's not five guys, you've got to stop 10\. We'll move on. Film doesn't lie. We'll analyze the film and we'll fix our mistakes."

One highlight for Bedford was goalie Matt Howe, who despite surrendering all of the Cardinals' goals, played well and showed good communication with the Bulldogs defense.

"There were some shots where I felt he could have had them," Guerard said of Howe, a senior who will play at Dowling College nxt year. "First time under the lights and playing with the yellow ball in over a year, maybe he lost a few. But overall, I thought he did a good job communicating with the defense and did a good job."

Bedford will see action on Saturday, when its scheduled to participate in a play day at Yarmouth, Maine.
