GOFFSTOWN – Chris McIntosh isn’t going to apologize for the Keene High School boys hockey team picking up a win.

But after Wednesday’s 4-3 win over Goffstown at Saint Anselm’s Sullivan Arena, the Blackbirds coach felt like maybe his guys got away with one they shouldn’t have.

A big reason for that was Jerred Tattersal.

The Keene senior scored all three of his goals in the second period, helping to turn a 1-0 deficit into a two-goal lead going into the third. A power play goal by Ben Brown in the first five minutes of the third proved to be the game-winner for the Blackbirds.

Goffstown scored twice in two-plus minutes after Brown's goal to get back within one, and had a four-minute power play at the end of game, but couldn’t get the equalizer.

"I thought our second period was OK for sure," McIntosh said. "One of our best players stepped up, and without his effort and initiative, we certainly don’t score those three goals. Overall, we can play a lot better.

"We’re a better team than we showed (Wednesday). It was frustrating to watch. I’ve seen us play at a much higher level."

Peter Haas added three assists for the Blackbirds (3-0-1 in Division II) and Jacob Russell made 24 saves in goal, including helping Keene kill off the long Goffstown power play at the end of the game to preserve the win.

"He has been great," Tattersal said of Russell. "He’s probably the reason why we’re winning these big games and he’s keeping us in it. Getting the penalty at the end hurt us a little bit, but we were able to push through and come away with a win."

With 4:23 left in the game, Keene's Joseph Walsh was called for high-sticking, and when he flipped the puck to center ice in frustration, was given an unsportsmanlike minor, putting Goffstown (5-2) on the man-advantage for four minutes.

But Russell came up big, and got some help, as a shot by Grady Chretien with about 25 seconds left hit the crossbar.

Chretien had a goal for the Grizzlies, as he scored on a two-on-one with Colby Gamache with 8:49 left in the game to cut Keene's lead to 4-3\. Gamache also had a goal and Jackson Burke scored while Madeline Sage came up with 21 saves for Goffstown.

"I think we came out good in the first period and we let off in the second period," Goffstown coach Ben Slocumb said. "We took a couple bad penalties that came back to bite us."

That included a too-many-men penalty less than a minute into the third period, leading to Brown's goal that made it a 4-1 game.

"If you go look at that goal, my defenseman falls, trips over himself, and the puck just finds a guy," McIntosh said. "Pretty unlucky for them, and lucky for us. I don’t know if we deserved that one. We’ll take it."

Gamache put the Grizzlies up 1-0 at 4:57 of the first period, as he ripped a shot past Russell after Keene had controlled play early in the game. The goal seemed to give Goffstown some energy, as the Grizzlies were able to force the issue for most of the period and keeping the Blackbirds from any quality scoring chances.

But Goffstown's Theodore Milianes was called for a slash with 16.3 seconds left in the period, and just before the end of the power play, Tattersal was able to put a shot past Sage to tie the game 1-1 early in the second.

"The first one was on the power play," Tattersal said. "I just kind of walked in a couple of times, hit the post once. It was fortunate enough to go in."

The senior made it 2-1 six minutes later, when he collected a rebound and went around the goal, beating Sage to the far side. His third goal also came off a rebound, as Tattersal put a backhand high into the net to give Keene a 3-1 lead with 2:50 left in the second.

"He quarterbacks their whole team," Slocumb said of Tattersal. "They look to go to him and he’s a very good player."

For Tattersal, it felt like being at the right place at the right time.

"We had a big second period," he said. "We played as a team. Even though I had three goals, it was a team effort. I was just the guy to put it in the back of the net."
