NASHUA - When the shot went up, Andre Kargbo knew where he needed to be.

So when John Sullivan’s 3-point attempt bounced off the rim, Kargbo was in the perfect spot to grab the rebound.

The sophomore got the board, and in the same motion, put up a shot that went in just before the buzzer sounded to give the Nashua High School North boys basketball team a 55-53 win Friday night over Nashua South in the Battle of the Bridge.

The basket came just moments after a three-point play by South's Francisco Rodriquez Malagon had tied it at 53, in a game the Panthers led by as many as 12 points in the second half.

“I knew we had about 10 seconds left,” Kargbo said. “Josh had the ball, I knew he was going to shoot it. Once he shot it, I know it’s going to kind of come toward me, so I crashed (the boards). I just went up, got it, and went up with it.”

Kargbo finished with 15 points for the Titans (4-7), including three 3-pointers, the last of which gave North its first lead, 47-46, with 3:29 left to play. Tyson Hoang also had 15 points and Sullivan finished with eight points, all in the second half.

“We always talk about the size disadvantage that we’re at,” North coach Kyle Tave said. “The biggest thing for us is we know that we need all hands on deck (rebounding) at both ends. When that happens, you’ve got to try to get everything you can.

“Crashing on the glass, trying to be opportunistic in that third and fourth quarter, what we really tried to do is, we tried to look for opportunities. That’s an emphasis that we know as a team we have to do.”

It didn't like there would be many opportunities for North after the first quarter, when South (4-6), energized with senior Josh Tripp on the floor for the first time this season, stormed out to a 19-6 lead after one.

But the Titans found a way to hang in there, held the Panthers to just eight points in the second quarter, and trailed 27-19 at halftime. A big reason for that was the defensive pressure North started to put on South.

“The last two days at practice, we talked about good presses don’t necessarily steal the ball,” South coach Nate Mazerolle said. “After one timeout, I said ‘what play did I just call after a turnover?’ They answered, but we didn’t run the play, and that’s part of it. We broke the press, and then it’s just a matter of that next step and then execute, and we’d be fine.”

Tripp had 18 points, going 8 of 8 at the free throw line, to lead South in his return, while Rodriquez Malagon and Rigo Challinger each had eight points. The Panthers played long stretches from the second quarter on without Daniel Karavanic, as he battled foul trouble and finished with six points.

The Panthers regrouped at halftime and got going again on offense, enough to lead by a dozen points, 35-23, with 3:20 left in the third quarter. But the Titans wouldn't go away and cut the lead down to seven, 41-34, by the end of the frame.

Hoang opened the fourth quarter with a three-point play, starting a 7-0 run by North that tied the game at 41 with 6:35 remaining. South managed to hold off the Titans, going back in front 46-44 on a pair of free throws by Tripp, but Kargbo answered with a 3 to give North its first lead.

The game was tied at 50 on a basket by Hoang with 2:02 to go, and after a South turnover, North's Connor Johnston hit the first of two free throws to give the Titans a one-point lead. The senior missed the second and the Panthers got the rebound, taking a timeout with a minute remaining.

But North's defense held, with Sullivan coming up with a steal, and a South foul put Hoang at the line with 23.8 seconds remaining. The junior made both to give the Titans a three-point lead, but Rodriquez Malagon came right back, tying the game with a basket and free throw.

“I wanted to get to the rim and then call a timeout,” Mazerolle said. “The fact that it became an and-1 was just gravy. It was a great take by Francisco and to make that tough free throw, that’s very impressive.”

With the game tied again, Sullivan launched a deep 3 from in front of the North bench with enough time left for Kargbo's putback. Once the buzzer sounded, the Titans ran toward the student section to celebrate with their classmates.

“Really it comes down to the kids and their composure,” Tave said. “They locked in, they got disciplined, so they weren’t frantic trying to make things happen. They started to let the game come to them. It was a battle.”
