DERRY – Jamie Isaac was looking for a way to atone after fumbling the ball away three plays into Pinkerton Academy’s football game on Friday night against Concord High School.

The dynamic senior speedster more than made up for his miscue in the remainder of the first half.

Isaac opened the game’s scoring by returning an interception 59 yards for a touchdown and offensively gained 150 scrimmage yards on 10 touches with two more scores during Pinkerton’s 44-13 Division I victory on Memorial Field. Pinkerton improved to 5-2 while Concord dropped to 4-3.

“The first play that I got, I fumbled, so I knew after that I had to really focus to get back,” Isaac said. "I feel like as a leader that if I’m down, the whole team is down. Just coming back and getting that interception helped.”

Pinkerton coach Brian O’Reilly welcomed back Isaac with open arms during last week’s 41-6 win over Manchester Central after he missed two games with an ankle injury. The Astros lost both of those games by scores of 27-13 to Salem and 28-25 against two-time defending-champion Bedford.

His return has added significance since leading rusher Matt Morrison has been out with a broken pinky in his left hand, suffered against Bedford.

“Jaime is special and we’re happy to get him back, we lost him a few weeks ago and it was a big blow for us,” O’Reilly said. “He makes a big difference for us on defense. He’s our best defensive back, he covers the best receivers and makes plays on offense. He’s everything.”

Isaac hadn’t made an interception yet this season until picked off a Concord quarterback Colby Nyhan’s pass off a deflection made by Pinkerton’s pass rush. Isaac sped by everybody down the sideline to give the Astros a 7-0 lead with 1:59 left in the first quarter.

“I was on my guy and I didn’t expect him to throw it because I was on him and then I see him throw,” Isaac said. “Then it gets tipped and I’m like ‘I’ve got to go grab that.' I get it and just started taking off and made a couple of people miss before I got in.”

After Pinkerton took a 9-0 lead following a safety during an errant punt snap by Concord, Isaac returned the ensuing free kick 40 yards and rushed for a score four plays from 21 yards out to give Pinkerton a 16-0 lead early in the second quarter.

Concord’s Tim Fahnbulleh countered with a 78-yard kickoff return for a score, but a 30-yard connection between Pinkerton quarterback Aiden McDonald and Isaac helped set up a 6-yard scoring run by McDonald.

Isaac reeled in a 52-yard touchdown pass from McDonald to give Pinkerton a 29-7 halftime lead. McDonald completed 9 of 11 passes for 197 yards and added a 40-yard touchdown pass to Cam Dillon in the third quarter.

“When we call for (Isaac) to get the ball, we have no doubts,” McDonald said. “He’s either going to break one or get 10-20 (yards) plus.”

Isaac wanted to prove this year how much he can affect a game in a plethora of ways and he’s done that entering next Friday’s regular-season final at Alvirne.

“It definitely shows my abilities to what I can do as a defender, runner and a receiver,” Isaac said. “It was just great just to show what I can do in front of the fans in what could possibly be our last home game.”
