LACONIA - Deacon Blue has confidence in the Hopkinton High School boys lacrosse team from the top to the bottom of the roster.

That's one reason why the Hawks coach likes to see his team play at a faster tempo. When someone needs a break, the next guy up is there to get the job done.

In Wednesday's Division III semifinal, top-seeded Hopkinton was able to overcome some early nerves to get out and run past No. 4 Plymouth. The Hawks broke the game open by outscoring the Bobcats 6-1 in the second quarter and never looked back in an 11-2 win that gives the defending champions a chance to make it two in a row.

Hopkinton will face No. 2 Laconia, which beat No. 6 Monadnock in the other semifinal, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Exeter.

"We were pushing the tempo, which is something we’ve tried to do all season," Blue said. "I’ve got a lot of confidence about the depth of our roster, using different guys and pushing transition, getting quick passes so that we can get easy goals close."

Leading the way for Hopkinton (16-0) was sophomore Colby Quiet, who scored four of his game-high five goals in the second quarter and also had an assist. Jake Tomlinson added three goals while Carter Quiet (assist) and Joe Sawitsky had a goal apiece.

Alex Rousseau made 14 stops for the Hawks, as their defense didn't let Plymouth (12-4) get many opportunities from in close.

"We had practiced the fact they’d be pressing out and pressuring us," Plymouth coach Glenn Mausolf said. "We worked on those things, we just didn’t quite have the ball long enough to establish a rhythm.

"We just didn’t have the time of possession and that hurt. (Goalie) Chris (Patnaude) made a ton of great saves all night. That first quarter, he stood tall. The defense was hanging in there, but it’s hard to win games when you are in your defense end all the time."

Patnaude finished with 12 saves while Steven Shute and Marcus Morel each had a goal and Connor Magowan added an assist.

Plymouth struggled all game to clear the ball, but in the first quarter, the Bobcats were able to hang in their thanks to Patnaude and the defense of Wes Lambert, Josh Johnson and Camden MacDonald, keeping it a 1-0 game after one.

"My whole defensive unit, there are a couple of things here and there you’d like to have back, but there was definitely a lot of good checks and good interceptions," Mausolf said. "We were scrapping for those ground balls. The score doesn’t reflect it, but at the same time, when it was settled, six-on-six situation, I thought we were pretty solid. It was transition that really hurt."

Colby Quiet made it a 2-0 game when he knocked in a loose ball in front of the crease past Patnaude, who had started to come out to try to get the groundball. The Hopkinton sophomore won the ensuing faceoff and came right down the field, making it 3-0 just seven seconds later.

Pete Sintros then found Quiet on a break to make it 4-0 and force Plymouth to take a timeout with 7:45 left in the half. But the Hawks won the faceoff and Tomlinson got his first of the game to make it 5-0.

Shute answered for Plymouth just 11 seconds later, but Tomlinson and Quiet scored 1:02 apart to make it 7-1 with 4:23 left in the first half.

"I think we were a little jittery to start and not sure what to expect going in because we didn’t see Plymouth in the regular season," Blue said. "Once we got past that first quarter, we got back into playing our game and pushing transition. We were pressuring them on defense and getting back up to the offense."
