HOLLIS – For two hours Saturday, Love Lane Field turned into an amusement park.

The Hollis Brookline High School and Pinkerton Academy girls lacrosse teams took everyone on a roller coaster ride that couldn’t be decided in regulation. The teams needed overtime and when the two three-minute periods were done, the Cavaliers came away with a 14-12 victory, their first against the Astros.

HB led by five in the first half, but lost that lead early in the second half before falling behind. The Astros led for most of the second, but the Cavs tied the game on a goal by Mariah Passamonte with 58 seconds left and Julie Worthern scored what proved to be the game-winner with 1:16 left in the second overtime period.

“This was a huge win for us and it’s definitely a confidence boost for us,” HB senior Caitlin Sweeney said. “We were confident in the beginning, which was good because we do well when we’re feeling confident. But then we got a little cocky and started to lose it.”

The Cavs got four goals and an assist from Katie O’Hara, who went down in the second half with a knee injury. Worthern added three goals while Sweeney scored both her goals in overtime and had an assist. Kasey Rich also had a goal and two assists and Leda Kennedy had two goals.

Pinkerton got four goals and an assist from Kennedy Daziel while Riann Daziel and Maggie McCarthy had three goals apiece. Clara Fenton had a goal and two assists.

“They gave a good effort,” Pinkerton coach Rob Daziel said of his team. “They’ve got a lot of heart. I talked to them at halftime and they responded.”

The Cavs (2-0 in Division I) jumped on the Astros (0-2) early, going up 4-0 under eight minutes into the game. While Pinkerton had possession of the ball for most of that time, HB was able to score almost every time it touched the ball.

“Our fast break defense had some holes in it,” Rob Daziel said. “We tightened up on defense and fought our way back.”

But not before the Cavs extended their lead to 7-2 on goal by O’Hara with 6:40 left in the half. The Astros started chipping away at the lead 17 seconds later, and two goals by McCarthy just before halftime cut HB’s lead to 8-5 at the break.

Riann Daziel added three more goals for Pinkerton in the first four minutes of the second half, tying the game at 8\. HB took a timeout with 21:19 left in the game, but it was the Astros who got the next goal a minute later, as Kennedy Daziel gave Pinkerton its first lead of the game.

O’Hara pulled the Cavs even with her fourth goal with 18:20 left but after getting control of the next draw, the HB senior injured her right knee and did not return to the game.

The Astros continued to control play, but only managed to score once more during regulation, thanks to some big saves from HB goalie Erin Turner, who finished with 10 stops.

“I trust Erin Turner the most out of any goalie I’ve ever had,” Sweeney said. “I think she has so much skill. She was one of the best out there today.”

With the Cavs still down a goal, HB’s Emily Lombardi received a yellow card with 2:13 left. That meant the Cavs would be shorthanded for all but the final 13 seconds, but Passamonte’s goal tied things up with under a minute to play.

“Our team does a lot better when we’re random,” Sweeney said. “We tried a couple of plays and sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. We do really well with free motion and that’s what we did for most of overtime and it worked.”

Goals by Sweeney and Rich put HB up 12-10 with 1:15 left in the first three-minute overtime period, but Kennedy Daziel scored late in the first period and early in the second to tie the game at 12.

Worthern scored with 1:16 left to give the Cavs the lead back and Sweeney iced the win with 59 seconds remaining.
