Hollis Brookline needs OT to beat Goffstown at Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament

NASHUA - Matt Fothergill made 5 of 6 free throws in overtime and the Hollis Brookline High School boys basketball held off Goffstown 51-44 in overtime Friday the Chick-fil-A Holiday Basketball Tournament at Nashua South.

Shea Whalen led the Cavaliers with 17 points, including four in the extra session, and Fothergill finished with 12, including 7 of 8 total from the free throw line. HB also got 10 points from Logan Blake.

Goffstown stayed in the game thanks to its 3-point shooting. Of the Grizzlies' 15 field goals, 11 came from behind the arc, including seven by Tim Riehl, who had a game-high 21 points. Marcus Haynes also added nine points, all on 3s.

Despite going through two stretches of four-plus minutes without scoring - one each in the second and third - the Cavs still had an eight-point lead going into the fourth quarter, and with 5:24 remaining, HB was up 39-31.

But two 3s by Riehl and a jumper by Patrick Kelsey, along with two missed layups and the front of a one-and-one by HB, cut the lead to 41-39 with 2:25 to go. A free throw by Blake put the Cavs up 42-39, but another 3 from Riehl tied the game with 1:34 left.

After an HB turnover, the Grizzlies held the ball for the final 1:22 of the fourth, but missed on two last-second shots that would have won the game. Goffstown took an early lead in overtime, but Whalen and Fothergill helped the Cavs solidify the win.

HB will take on Nashua North in the tournament's fifth-place game at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, while Goffstown plays Milford in the seventh-place game at 12.
