HOLLIS - The Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team found ways to bring intensity to every game this season.

Playing in the program's first home playoff game in 15 years, Wednesday night was no different for the Cavaliers.

Fifth-seeded HB came out flying, scored twice in the first five minutes, and held No. 12 Pembroke in check for a 4-0 win in the Division II preliminary round.

Lindsey Dattis had a goal and an assist, including what proved to be the game-winner just 1:46 into the game off the first of nine penalty corners for the Cavs (11-3-1).

Sabrina Hill, Hailey Arseneau and Nyah Jernberg also scored for HB while Alyssa Hill and Bella Haytayan each added an assist. Reagan Kline made two saves on the only two shots by the Spartans (6-8-1), which came with about nine minutes to play in the second quarter.

"I couldn’t more proud," HB coach Greg Cochrane said. "They play with intensity, they play with high pace, and they wanted it (Wednesday) and you saw the result. I think we have had that most of the year."

It's been a year unlike many the Cavs have had in recent memory. After opening the season with two losses in their first three games, the Cavs have now gone 10-1-1 since, getting a home playoff game for the first time since 2007 and picking up their first playoff win in almost as long.

"This was our goal, to be able to host this first game," Cochrane said. "Once we got our feet under us, we were playing with that pace and intensity pretty much every game we played. Our intent is to come out and try to start the game fast.

"Two goals is definitely a bonus and gives us confidence, but we wanted to start the game with pace and with intent, and I think we did that."

Lily Corbitt finished with 10 saves for Pembroke, which was making its first postseason appearance in over 10 years.

While the Spartans struggled to generate much offensively, after allowing the two quick goals, the defense - led by Bria LePage, Kelsey Mountambeault and Natalie Longacre - buckled down and held HB to two the rest of the way.

"We gave them corners, but we just didn’t step to the ball in front of our net on the first two goals," Pembroke coach Steve Langevin said. "We were a little tentative at the beginning, but after that second goal, it was a while before they got another one.

"For us to even be in this position is a great season for them. They haven’t been in the tournament for 10 or 15 years. They’ve won one game in the last three years. Just to get here is a great accomplishment. We gave up a couple early, but we didn’t back down, we didn’t stop playing."

Sabrina Hill gave HB a 2-0 lead with 10:57 remaining in the first quarter after Corbitt stopped her first two attempts. It looked like she made it 3-0 in a corner with about five minutes left in the frame, but the goal was waved off because the ball deflected in off Hill's foot.

Arseneau got the lead to three with 2:38 remaining in the first half, sending a hard shot into the back of the cage from close to the edge of the circle.

Pembroke was able to keep HB at bay through the third quarter, but Jernberg was able to finish out front on a feed from Dattis just 2:08 into the fourth quarter to make it 4-0.

The Cavs move on to the quarterfinals, where they will travel to North Conway to face No. 4 Kennett, which defeated No. 13 Bow, 2-1 in overtime. The teams didn't play this season and going from the home turf to the grass at Kennett will be a challenge for HB.

"We will change our style a little bit for the grass game," Cochrane said. "We have a practice field that’s grass. We’ll refresh ourselves with the way the ball moves and how it’s unpredictable. We’ve played a number of grass games this year and we came out feeling pretty good about ourselves. We’re going to give them a run for their money."
