# Hollis Brookline girls volleyball looks for 4th straight title against Bedford team making first D1 final appearance

The Bedford High School girls volleyball team is not lacking for senior leadership.

With 10 of them on the roster, it's been a blessing to have so much experience for the Bulldogs this season. What it means for next year, well, they'll save that worry for another day.

There are bigger things to think about - like the Bulldogs playing in their first championship match.

The sixth-seeded Bulldogs (17-4) will try for the program's first title at 5 p.m. Saturday at Pinkerton Academy against No. 1 Hollis Brookline (20-0), which has won the past three Division I championships.

"It was tough, but at the same time, I knew we could do it," Bedford senior Breanna Moscillo said of reaching the final. "I trust everyone on the team. We know what we’re capable of."

Bedford started to find out that was after the team's first meeting with HB, a 3-0 win for the Cavaliers, back on Sept. 12\. The Bulldogs won eight matches in a row after that loss, and despite going 4-3 over their final seven, they avenged two of those losses in the playoffs, knocking off No. 3 Bishop Guertin in the quarterfinals and No. 2 Nashua South in the semifinals.

"I think having a lot of seniors who don’t want this to be their last game of volleyball, they wanted to make it to Saturday, where you don’t have a choice," Bedford coach Anna McGann said. "That’s the point we wanted to get to. They really prepare for the team we’re playing against. Our strategy for BG was totally different from our strategy for Nashua South, as it will be for Saturday.

"I’m fortunate, or unfortunate however you want to look at it, I’ve got 10 seniors on a team of 13\. They’ve been playing with each other for a long time. They’ve all been playing with Bedford for the four years they’ve been here. They’re all friends with each other, too, so that helps. That maturity that they have has been able to boost them up and bring up the underclassmen, too."

Bedford isn't the only team with seniors. HB has seven seniors on the roster, and for some of them, this will be their eighth game at Pinkerton for the semifinals or final. Not only have the Cavs won 53 straight matches, but this class has gone 79-6 during their four-year high school careers.

Despite that success, HB isn't treating this final any differently than the previous ones.

"We’ve been practicing all year for this," HB senior Maddie Norris said. "We work really hard every day. We leave everything else that isn’t volleyball outside the court when we come to practice every day. I really think that we were focused on playing our game this time and not worrying about what they were doing to us. Worry about what we can do to get the next point and keep moving."

Having reached this point before, the Cavs knew all season what it would take to get back. They knew they had to focus on the little things along the way while also not getting too far ahead of themselves.

"We’ve worked on that all season," HB coach Becky Balfour said. "No one gets to this point accidentally, it’s all purposeful. We’ve worked on staying composed, regardless of score, regardless of set.

"We want to play our game all the way through regardless of what they’re doing. We got here playing the way we do, and we’re going to play them the way we do."
