Hollis Brookline football makes quick work of ConVal (video)

HOLLIS - Sander Wimmer felt like he could have done more for the Hollis Brookline High School football team in its first loss of the season.

So when the Cavaliers took the field Saturday against ConVal, the junior quarterback tried to leave everything on the field.

Wimmer left enough out there, his day was done at halftime, as he threw for over two hundred yards and three touchdowns, and ran for another, to help HB get out to a 35-0 lead on the way to a 42-0 win over the Cougars in a Division II South Conference game.

Chad Brown, Quinten Wimmer and Austin Johnson each caught a touchdown pass from Sander Wimmer, while Brandon Iodice and Ben Lindsey also had rushing scores to help the Cavs (2-1) bounce back from a loss to Hanover the week before.

"It was really big," Sander Wimmer said of getting the win. "I put a lot of the loss last game on myself, so I knew I had to showcase my skills (Saturday). I did that, and our whole team did."

Wimmer was 19 of 25 for 222 yards to go with three touchdowns and an interception in the first half, and also ran for 57 yards and a score, while Quinten, his brother, had six catches for 103 yards and Johnson grabbed six balls for 66 yards while Brown also had five catches for 35 yards. Seven different players caught a pass for HB on the day, as the Cavs outgained ConVal, 488-98.

"We did what our game plan was," HB coach Chris Lones said. "The kids came in and executed the game plan, outside of the pick inside the red zone. The kids executed well, all in all, and competed, no matter who went out. They kept their emotions in check. ConVal is a rival and there was some talking, but they kept their heads."

Iodice added 68 yards rushing on 11 carries and Lindsey had two carries in the second half, gaining 50 yards. Alex Lee and Tyler Trombley split time at quarterback in the second half and combined to go 5 of 7 for 42 yards and an interception by Lee.

After forcing a punt on ConVal's first possession, HB went 84 yards in 10 plays, which included converting a fourth-and-3 from the Cougars' 13-yard line to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass from Sander Wimmer to Brown.

A short punt on the Cougars' next possession gave the Cavs the ball near midfield, and they again got inside the 20. But on first-and-goal from the 10, Wimmer escaped a pair of tackles and his pass attempt was intercepted by Justin Burns.

"We’ve got to clean that up," Lones said. "We can’t have those missed opportunities. They come back to bite you. (Saturday) it didn’t, but (in the loss to) Hanover last week hurt us."

ConVal was forced to punt again and the HB offense started rolling. The Cavs scored on all four of their possessions in the second quarter, getting out to a 35-0 lead with 2:23 left in the half.

The Cougars forced two turnovers in the third quarter to keep the Cavs out of the end zone, and crossed midfield for the only time of the day in the final minutes of the frame. ConVal got down to the HB 8-yard line, but quarterback Tristan Hutchinson was sacked by the Cavs' John Rutledge on second down, and after a run by Andrew Stockwell for no gain, Hutchinson's fourth-down pass fell incomplete.

Stockwell led ConVal (1-2) with 42 yards rushing on 10 carries.
