EXETER - The Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team had some momentum late in the first quarter of Tuesday's Division II semifinal.

The Cavaliers just needed something to put them over the edge against Bow.

They got it, with under three minutes left in the quarter, when Addison Marchant found an opening between Falcons goalie Kayla Croscut and the near post for the only goal HB needed.

Emily Tebbetts added two more goals off penalty corners in the fourth quarter and the top-seeded Cavs avenged their only defeat of the regular season with a 3-0 win over No. 4 Bow at Bill Ball Stadium in Exeter.

The win puts HB in a championship game for the first time since 1990, when the Cavs reached the Class M-S final before losing to Winnisquam. That was the program's only finals appearance, until now.

"It means everything," HB coach Greg Cochrane said. "We try our hardest to create a winning mindset and a winning culture. A lot of these girls, they’re seniors now from the first time we were here (in the semifinals in 2022). It means everything to this program, it means everything to these girls, and it means everything to the future, that this is what we have to aspire to. These are the standards that we have to play to."

Sabrina Hill, Nyah Jernberg and Ashley Disco each had an assist on the goals for HB (17-1) and goalie Maddie Barich had three saves as the Cavs recorded their 13th shutout of the season.

Croscut finished with seven saves for Bow (13-4-1), which was the only team to beat HB during the regular season, handing the Cavs a 1-0 loss on Sept. 20\. The Falcons scored late in the first quarter for the game's only goal, but this time around, it was HB getting on the board before the end of the first.

On the Cavs' second penalty corner of the game, Marchant inserted the ball on the near side to Hill, who gave the ball back to Marchant just inside the end line. With defenders all around her, the senior put a shot toward the only opening she could see and it got past Croscut for a 1-0 lead with 2:33 left in the quarter.

"It felt huge," Marchant said. "It was an improvised goal. That wasn’t the plan for that corner, but it came to me and I saw the open corner of the goal and I shot it. I was so happy when it went in. It was the perfect start to keep our momentum going for the rest of the game."

It was a play that Cochrane has come to expect from one of his senior captains.

"It’s a play that we’ve tried to work early and it worked early," he said. "Addie is a clutch player. She comes through for us when we need it most. She finds a way to get it done."

The Cavs controlled play from there for most of the game, finishing with 12 penalty corners to just two for the Falcons.

But it wasn't until the fourth quarter that HB was able to get some breathing room, with both goals by Tebbetts coming off corners, both from almost the exact same spot.

"It’s awesome, there are no other words," the senior said. "That’s just my spot, I love hitting from that angle. They let the opportunity open, I just hit it right in."

And now the Cavs are right in the final.
