HOLLIS – It’s still September and there’s a long way to go.

Both Cassidy Huckins and Greg Cochrane repeated the sentiment a couple of times following Cochrane’s Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team picked up a 2-0 win over Huckins’s John Stark squad on Sept. 12.

But for one night, almost six weeks before the playoffs are set to begin, it sure felt like the postseason was in the air.

"We do need to put it in perspective," Cochrane said. "It’s the fourth game of the season, but this is a big game, with teams that are hopefully going to be there in the end. You know John Stark is going to be there. Full credit and respect to them."

For Huckins, who took over as the Generals head coach in the offseason, it was an early learning experience, that no matter what she thinks of her team, the opponent sees the two-time defending champion in Division II.

"It sure did (have a playoff feel), especially in the beginning of the season like this," she said. "They’re a top five team in the division, too, for sure. You learn from this as a new coach, too. How to adjust throughout the game. I tried my best the second half, but sometimes, it happens. They have a few strong players who really controlled that game."

After a start that saw the Generals (4-1, No. 10 in the NHHSSports Caoches Poll) control the early moments of play, the Cavaliers flipped the field and kept the ball on John Stark's side for most of the first half.

HB finished the half with 10 penalty corners, but came up short on the first eight, thanks in part to Generals goalie Rowin Ledy, who finished with six saves.

Addison Marchant finally put the Cavs (4-0) on the board when she knocked the ball out of a scrum and sent it into the back of the cage with 3:25 left in the second quarter.

The Generals took a timeout after that, but HB continued to put pressure on and was awarded another corner moments later. Emily Tebbetts took a shot from the top of the circle and Brooke Bouchard tipped it into the goal to make it 2-0 with 1:42 remaining in the half.

"We ended up with multiple corners, and even though we got a lot, we did capitalize," Cochrane said. "I thought our looks were there. I’m pleased with the amount we got. Some we forced, and that’s what I want to see from our forwards, attacking the circle, getting shots, or earning corners."

Play evened out in the second half, with John Stark getting its first corner early in the third quarter. The Generals had four more in the fourth, but the Cavs were able to limit the damage, including a stop by goalie Maddie Barich on a corner early in the final quarter.

"They played a solid first half and we tried to fight back the second half, we just couldn’t get it," Huckins said. "They doubled a couple of our strong players and that kind of affected our first half and they dominated on their half. I adjusted the third quarter and I thought we came out stronger. It was more on our end to try to score, we just couldn’t execute."
