# Hollis Brookline field hockey stifles John Stark to win D2 title for first time

BEDFORD - All year, the Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team had a way it wanted to play going into every game.

The Division II championship game Saturday night was no different, and the Cavaliers were able to play their game once again.

Top-seeded HB scored off two penalty corners, including one in the final minute of the third quarter that gave the Cavs some breathing room, and they held off No. 3 John Stark for a 2-0 win at Bedford High School. The championship is the first for HB in field hockey in only its second title-game appearance.

"I knew we were fired up, we were ready, and we just came out like we were shot out of a cannon," HB coach Greg Cochrane said. "We tried to beat them to the ball, we tried to be in front of them all night. We keyed in on certain players and then adjusted as we needed to. The girls wanted it bad and they just went out and took it."

Emily Tebbetts scored the only goal HB (18-1) would need with 5:24 remaining in the second quarter and Addison Marchant deflected a ball that looked like it was going over the cage down into the goal with 19.8 seconds left in the third to make it a two-goal lead.

Nyah Jernberg assisted on each score and Maddie Barich made two saves early, as the Cavs kept the Generals (15-4) from generating many scoring opportunities. John Stark had just three corners, to nine for HB, which also defeated the two-time defending champs 2-0 in the regular season.

"They came out really strong, which is what we saw in the first game," Jernberg said. "Just like the last game, we rose above it and came out hungrier."

HB had a trio of corners in the first quarter, but John Stark goalie Rowin Ledy (five saves) came up with a stop on each one to keep the game scoreless.

The Cavs also had three corners in the second and broke through on the last one, scoring on a play that was similar to one of the goals they scored in the semifinals against Bow.

"That was the same play we had the last game," Tebbetts said. "It just works. They left it open. I love that shot, that’s my spot, and it went in."

Even with the Generals keying on Tebbetts, after she'd scored twice in the semifinal, the Cavs were able to find a way to get her an open look.

"We’ve got a lot of deception, where we can do different looks, but end the same place," Cochrane said. "She’s got that wicked shot and she’s not afraid to let it rip. The girls work even harder to feed her the ball in those spots she likes to be in.

"There it was, finding her in that spot, and letting her rip that ball. Good things happen when you can shoot it that hard and low at the goal."

Each team had a corner through the first 14 minutes of the third quarter, but most of the play remained in the midfield until the final minute. With time running out, HB got another corner, and this time, Jernberg was set up for the shot.

The ball was deflected high by a defender and Ledy reached up to try to knock it away. Instead, it went higher, toward Marchant, who was behind the Generals' defense at the goal line, and she batted the ball down into the goal.

"I shot it and it deflected up and it was a lollipop ball in the air and Addie just tucked it down," Jernberg said. "It just shows how hungry we were. I knew Addie was going to get it in. Her reflexes are so quick, I knew she was getting it in."

The Cavs, who allowed just five goals all season and never more than one in a game, were able to keep the Generals from getting a scoring opportunity in the fourth quarter and held on to win their first championship.

"I just knew we had something there," Cochrane said. "The commitment level that we had from the girls from the summer on, I could tell there was something special here. When we played summer league, and the way we played, we just kind of continued on with that momentum and never looked back."
