HOLLIS - The Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team may not have seen a lot of adversity on the field this season, but coach Greg Cochrane knew the Cavaliers would be ready when they were presented with it.

One of those moments happened Monday against Oyster River and HB responded the way its head coach believed it would.

The Cavs overcame a third quarter that saw the Bobcats tie the game, and then almost take the lead, but the game eventually went to overtime. After Oyster River had three penalty corners to open the 7-on-7 play, HB countered and took a 2-1 win when Nyah Jernberg found the back of the cage with 4:49 remaining.

"We haven’t had a lot of hard tests," Cochrane said. "But I’m hard on them (in practice). The adversity is created by us in our practices. We’re ready for these situations. There is no situation that you’re going to throw at us that we’re not ready for. We may not always come out victorious, but we’re ready for them."

Addison Marchant also scored for HB (9-1, No. 10 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll) and had an assist on the game-winning goal while Emily Tebbetts also had an assist. Maddie Barich had five saves for the Cavs, including one late in the fourth quarter and one in overtime.

Rowynn Pickering had the goal for the Bobcats (9-1, No. 7), with Nora Rogers getting an assist, while goalie Brooke Emond finished with 13 saves.

"It was a good game," Oyster River coach Anne Golding said. "I’m thankful for this game and this opportunity because we learned a lot from it. It’s a long month. As a team, we watch film, we learn about this, we think about things we adjusted. I have a laundry list of the things in my head that we’re going to cover."

Oyster River not only opened the season with nine straight wins, it had outscored its opponents 47-3, with two of those goals allowed coming in last Friday's 4-2 win over Souhegan.

But HB was able to take control of the game in the first quarter, forcing Emond to make a couple of saves before the Cavs ended up getting a corner. HB had four in the quarter, finally scoring on the last one with no time left, when Marchant knocked in a loose ball for a 1-0 lead.

Although play evened out in the second quarter, it was still a one-goal game going into halftime.

The Bobcats were able to put pressure on the Cavs in the third quarter, getting a couple of corners before Pickering's goal with 4:36 remaining tied the game at 1.

"I think that we did a good job adjusting to HB’s defensive style, to pack it in between you and your teammates," Golding said. "It’s just a wall of separation and you can’t get through. They made the adjustments they needed to get through and it was one quarter at a time."

Moments after the goal, Pickering had another chance, but Barich made the save to keep the game tied and countered with a scoring chance of its own. The plays at either end seemed to give the Cavs some momentum as they entered the fourth quarter.

"I just think we’re a resilient group," Cochrane said. "Maddie made a huge save. Maddie hasn’t seen a lot of action, but we know what Maddie is all about. She’s an incredible hard worker and she faces all our best attacks."

HB had four corners in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get a shot past Emond. Oyster River had a chance to win in the final minute on a corner, but Barich came up with another save to send the game to overtime.

The Bobcats controlled play early in the overtime, including getting a couple of corners, but couldn't capitalize. Pickering had another chance to score with just over five minutes remaining, but the ball was just a little too far out in front for her to put it on goal in time.

The Cavs took advantage, going the other way. Jernberg sent the ball across the circle, where Marchant tracked it down and passed it back to the center. With the Oyster River defense moving back, Jernberg took advantage of the space and knocked the ball past a sprawling Edmond.

"Nyah is just a special player for us," Cochrane said. "She does everything for us, she works incredibly hard. She’s been this same kid since freshman year. I’ve been watching this and it’s great to see it coming out last year and now this year."
