The Hollis Brookline High School field hockey team found a way Friday afternoon to make it happen. The Cavaliers took an early lead, withstood a response from Souhegan late in the first half, and then put the game away in the fourth quarter for a 4-1 win in the regular-season finale for both teams. “It wasn’t perfect, but we ended up getting a win, that’s what was important,” HB coach Greg Cochrane said. “I loved the energy, but at times, it wasn’t as clean as I would have liked us to play.” Nyah Jernberg and Caroline Crawford each had two goals for the Cavs (15-1, No. 9 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll), as they each scored a goal in each half, and Maddie Barich had six saves. Souhegan (11-5) got its lone goal from Eme Godin, who flipped a reverse shot past Barich in the second quarter after the HB goalie had stopped the two previous attempts. The win gives HB the top seed entering the Division II playoffs, which begin on Oct. 22\. The Cavs will have a bye in the first round and host a quarterfinal on Oct. 26. “Our goal was to just do one percent better every game,” HB coach Greg Cochrane said. “Here we are now the No. 1 seed. We’ve had to work hard for it and we appreciate it. We’re going to come out as strong as we can.” It didn’t come without a few nervous moments. Jernberg scored with 3:50 left in the first quarter and Crawford deflected a shot by Emily Tebbetts on a penalty corner with 6:04 to go in the second to give HB a 2-0 lead. The Sabers answered on a corner of their own, as Isabelle Brandt’s shot was stopped by Barich. Godin collected the rebound and her first attempt was turned aside. With the ball moving toward the end line, Godin flipped a reverse through the short side and in to make it 2-1 with 2:29 left in the half. “I was proud of the way they responded going down 2-0,” Souhegan coach Kelli Braley said. “That showed some tenacity to fight back.” The goal gave Souhegan momentum and HB was able to run out the half hanging on to the one-goal lead. “I got nervous there,” Cochrane said. “There might have been a little bit of a letup. I did get into them at halftime and at the third-quarter break. They’re a receptive team. They were going to respond.” Each team had some chances in the third quarter, but both Barich and Souhegan goalie Amelia Warecki (six saves) came up with stops. Jernberg gave the Cavs some breathing room just 40 seconds into the fourth, when her shot deflected off a defender and out of reach of Warecki to make it 3-1\. Crawford made it 4-1 off an assist from Jernberg with 4:23 to close out the scoring. “Not the greatest way to end the regular season,” Braley said. “We’re lucky this doesn’t end our season, but the next one does.”
