HOLLIS - The Hollis Brookline High School boys lacrosse team found itself Thursday evening in the spot it had been in a month prior.

Midway through the first quarter, the Cavaliers were trailing Souhegan, although this time, their season was on the line.

No. 8 HB responded with a 3-0 run to end the quarter and outscored No. 9 Souhegan 9-2 over the next two-plus quarters on the way to a 13-9 win in the Division II preliminary round. The win sends the Cavs to Saturday's quarterfinals, where they will face No. 1 Portsmouth the road at 5 p.m.

"I’m really proud of this group, mostly because, you look at the sidelines, we have like eight hundred kids in this school and we’ve got 19 kids on our final roster," HB coach Dom St. Laurent said. "The story of our season is that we compete with just about everyone for a half and then we run out of gas. The fact that we’ve had a few games where guys do what’s expected and then some, is what’s lead to success like this. I think this group is a resilient group."

Ben Dufoe led the way with six goals for HB while Noah Taylor, Connor Cook and Tommy Anderson each added two goals. Andrew Torgersen had a goal and an assist and Noah Natalino had three assists.

Charlie Dee overcame a tough start to finish with 12 saves and Elliot Troddyn won 10 faceoffs against the Sabers' rotation.

On a day when temperature got into the 90s, the Cavs (11-7) were continuously substituting throughout the game to keep everyone as fresh as possible.

"At the beginning of the year, pretty much every day, we did significant amounts of conditioning," St. Laurent said. "I told the captains right out of the gate, if you guys are going to see any kind of success, you guys are going to end up being the best in-shape team in the state. Very proud of them being willing to mix it up."

AJ Hawkes and Madux McGrath each had two goals and an assist for Souhegan (9-8), while Ayden McGrath also scored twice. Zach Wyborney added a goal and an assist while JJ Bright had a goal and Owen Nolek had two assists.

Josh Dupuis finished with 13 saves for the Sabers, who beat HB 9-6 on May 2, holding the Cavs to their lowest offensive output of the season.

After Souhegan got out to leads of 2-1 and 3-2 to start the game, HB answered with three straight goals to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the first quarter. That run continued into the second, as the Cavs stretched it to a 7-0 run to go up 9-3 before Souhegan scored in the final minute of the half.

Any momentum the Sabers picked up from the goal was gone to start the second half, as the Cavs won the faceoff and held possession until Dufoe scored to make it 10-4 just 1:49 into the third.

Hawkes got it back 1:10 later, scoring a manup goal to make it 10-5, but HB took control again. Dupuis was able to make a couple of saves to keep things from getting worse, but the Cavs broke through with back-to-back goals late in the quarter, taking a 12-5 lead with 2:52 to go in the third.

Goals by Ayden McGrath and Wyborney in the final minute of the third gave the Sabers some life, making it 12-7 going into the fourth. Souhegan added two more goals in the first 2:29 of the final frame to cut the lead to three.

But the Cavs defense would hold up the rest of the way and Dufoe added a goal with 3:28 remaining to give HB more of a cushion.

"Throughout the season, we’ve progressed from a team that is eager and gunning to a team that is more interested in control and playing our kind of lacrosse," St. Laurent said. "That starts with being able to control the ball and working for great shots, not good ones.

"We came out ready to go and continued to build. I didn’t feel like there was any point in the game when we hit a valley, but continued to progress throughout and that was good."
