The Cavaliers couldn't have done much better, holding the Sabers scoreless through the first eight minutes, but the finish might have been more important long term. Up 14-0 after one quarter, and still up double digits early in the fourth, HB needed to come up with a couple of defensive stops late to hang on for a 59-54 win over Souhegan in a Division II contest. The win keeps the Cavs (10-0) undefeated after they faced a little bit more adversity than they've been used to this season. “I’m ecstatic because this was our closest game yet so far,” Kelley said. “I want the challenge. I’m trying to make every game as pressure filled as possible so that we can have close games like this and not panic. We’ll learn from this, too.” Renzo Bergskaug came off the bench to lead the Cavs with 14 points while James Arthur had 13 points, including two 3-pointers, and Alton Williams and Marco Bergskaug each had eight points. HB was able to take the lead early by hitting three of its six 3-pointers in the opening quarter, but then scored all but six of its 22 points in the third in the paint. “I think our roster makeup is unique,” Kelley said. “We have all three levels right now, so whatever defense that is thrown at us, we have something that we can go to, someone that we can go to. We also don’t fall off the cliff very quickly. Our bench is the strongest we’ve had in the three years that I’ve been here.” On defense, the Cavs spent the first quarter playing a zone that forced the Sabers (5-5) into eight turnovers and limited them to just three shot attempts. “They’re a good basketball team,” Souhegan coach Peter Pierce said of HB. “They’ve got a big guy in the middle, they’ve got guards that can finish, they’ve got guys who can shoot. They run their stuff well.” Weston Hickman scored 13 of his game-high 29 points in the second quarter, hitting two 3s, while Joe Mayo hit four 3s for 12 points. But no one else had more than five for the Sabers. Despite that, Souhegan, which lost to Manchester West, D2's other undefeated team, by two points last Friday, was able to get back into the game. “Weston settled us down, he made a couple of shots,” Pierce said. “We turned them over a couple of times so they can that the ball can go the other direction in transition. Then all of a sudden, they woke up and they played.” HB won its first nine games by an average of 25 points, with only one of those games decided by fewer than 10 points. But after taking a commanding lead after one, the Cavs saw the Sabers cut the lead to five late in the second quarter and again early in the third before regrouping to take a 12-point lead into the fourth. A pair of free throws by Renzo Bergskaug gave HB a 54-41 lead with 6:29 remaining, but the Cavs would go more than four minutes until they scored again. The Sabers went on an 11-0 run, with Hickman scoring the first seven points of the run, to get within 54-52 on a 3 by Mayo with 3:03 to play. Souhegan had a chance to tie or take the lead when HB turned the ball over on the next possession, but Renzo Bergskaug came up with a steal and was fouled. The sophomore hit one of two free throws to break the Cavs' scoring drought and then came up with another steal and a basket to make it 57-52. Sean Zerega answered for Souhegan, and after a Cavs turnover, the Sabers had another chance to tie. Pierce took a timeout with 27.3 seconds left, and Hickman was able to get a 3 off, but it was off the mark and Williams grabbed the rebound. Marco Bergskaug made a pair of free throws at the other end to put HB back up five points with 13.1 seconds left to secure the win. “They’ve got some players, so they’re going to know down the outside shot a few times,” Kelley said. “I think our poise was good enough (Tuesday), but we’ve also got a chance to grow.”
