Hollis Brookline's PJ Flaum goes in for a layup during Friday's' game.

NASHUA - The Hollis Brookline High School boys basketball team had just one player score in double figures, but got points from eight different players in a 47-40 win Friday over Nashua North.

Shea Whalen came off the bench for the Cavaliers to score 10 points, while Connor Walsh and PJ Flaum aeach added eight for HB, which led by as many as 11 points in the third quarter.

North got 14 points each from Jordan Lates and Aaron Cordova (four 3-pointers), but a slow start doomed the Titans.

"A little tentative in the first half, and from a young, inexperienced group, it will happen," North coach Steve Lane said. "The kids are gaining valuable experience. I thought in the second half, we came out more aggressive and we were able to change defenses more because we scored. It made it more the style that I'm looking for for the games ahead."

A 3 by Lates made it a three-point game midway through the second quarter, but HB went on an 8-2 run to take a 24-15 lead at halftime. The Cavs stretch that advantage to 11 points late in the third quarter, but North went 5 of 6 from the free throw line to end the frame and make it a six-point game heading into the fourth.

A layup by Cordova got North within four early in the fourth. HB was able to stretch the lead back to seven in a sloppy quarter, but the Titans got within four, 40-36, on a 3 by Cordova with 2:30 to play. Four free throws by Whalen and a basket by Logan Blake helped the Cavs hang on for the win.

"There's a lot of (teaching) points you can look at, but there were a lot of positives as far as our compete level," Lane said. "It's the little things I'm looking for. Boxing out, being in the right position on defense, thinking and reacting on the floor as a player, making layups and free throws, all fundamentals we're going to work on moving forward."

HB returns Saturday to take on Thornton Academy in the semifinals at 1:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the championship game at 6 p.m. North will face Campbell in a consolation game at 3 p.m. Saturday.
