MILFORD - The Hollis Brookline High School boys basketball team looked at Thursday night's Division II regular-season finale at Milford as a way to measure how far the team had come since the start of the year.

With the playoffs on the immediate horizon, the Cavaliers looked all grown up.

HB held Milford scoreless for more than six minutes to start the game, and when the Spartans went on a run in the second half, the Cavs stuck to their game plan and pulled away early in the fourth quarter for a 73-48 win.

Grant Snyder led HB (15-3), which on its 13th game in a row, with 20 points and Maxwell Stapelfeld recorded 19 points, as the Cavs clinched a top four seed in the D2 tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Monday.

"It shows the improvement we’ve put together all season and it’s a great way to head into the playoffs," HB coach Cole Etten said. "We end on a positive note and I thought the guys played really well (Thursday). I thought the guys did a great job executing the game plan. They stuck together out there and played as a team on defense."

And when the Cavs got into some earlier foul trouble, the got contributions from the bench, as Robert Haytayan (eight points) and Quinten Wimmer (six) came on in the first quarter to keep HB in front.

"Having guys step off the bench and play big roles is what we need, especially getting into the playoffs," HB senior Ryan Coutu said. "You can’t limp into the playoffs. This was a big win and it shows what the team is made of. It’s what we needed."

Milford (9-9) got 12 points from Jake Greska and 10 points from Caden Zalenski while Christian Jones and Gavin Urda each had five. But by the time the Spartans scored their first points of the game, they were already trailing by double digits.

"I think they’re very good, maybe the best in D2," Milford coach Dan Murray said of HB. "We just played tight. They had something to do with it. That’s been our (problem). We play a big game, we’re tight early and we get down, then we have to struggle to come back."

After trailing 17-2 early in the second quarter, the Spartans were able to close the gap by outscoring the Cavs 14-9 and making it a 10-point game on a basket by Ryon Constable with 1:15 left in the half. But Haytayan put HB up 28-16 going into the half and a basket by Adam Razzaboni to open the third quarter gave the Cavs a 14-point lead.

Milford responded with a 10-5 run to get within nine points on a 3-pointer by Jones, but the Spartans weren't able to get any closer.

"Third quarter, we loosened up a little bit, we went on a nice run and we were getting in a little bit of rhythm," Murray said. "Then I don’t know what happened."

Greska hit one of two free throws with a minute left in the third to cut HB's lead to 43-33, but the Cavs went on a 12-3 run to open the fourth quarter, going up 55-36 on a basket by Snyder with 5:13 to play.

"They’re a good shooting team," Snyder said. "We knew they’d be ready to go. We had to make sure we were ready to go. I loved the effort the boys came out with and we stuck to the plan."
