Hey, What's Going On: Bring on the Spring Sports Season

If I had a dollar for every time I went to a high school sports practice, and the practice went past the time it was scheduled to end, well, I could probably stop going to practices.

On Monday, I stopped by the Back River Sports Complex in Bedford to watch a little bit of the first day of practice for the Bishop Guertin High School boys lacrosse team and get info for what will be a fun story for later in the preseason.

The sun was shining, the wind was a little chilly, but I'd thrown on an extra layer to get away with wearing a lighter jacket, so it wasn't too bad. And perhaps the best part, the guys - a lot of them - were out on the turf, running through a typical first-day practice.

In fact, it was so enjoyable, that when Cardinals coach Chris Cameron wrapped up for the day, I didn't even notice that they'd gone past the time he'd said would be the end of practice - by a half an hour - until he apologized for going late.

But on a day like Monday, when I'm back outside for more than five minutes and it's not to clear snow from the driveway, it's hard to get upset. I'll take a chilly spring day and a chance to be outdoors nine times out of 10 over being in a hot gym or a cold arena.

So here we are, the start of another high school spring sports season. For those of you who have followed the site for a while, you by now know that means the next couple of months are going to be wall-to-wall boys and girls lacrosse coverage.

For those of you who are new, welcome, and please stick around for a while. It's about to get good.

This spring is going to feature a lot of things I've always done around here. There will be game coverage, highlight videos, photos and features, and you can keep up with all of that by signing up for a membership to the website.

Chris Hettler and I started the weekly boys lacrosse podcast last week and that will continue into June, and once again, I'll be putting together a preseason watch list of the top players for 2023, and at the end, my picks for boys and girls all-state.

The boys and girls lacrosse coaches polls will also be returning this spring, starting the weekend before the regular season begins.

There will also be some new things, starting with a weekly girls lacrosse podcast. I said I wanted to do it last year and wasn't able to pull it together. This year, it's happening, and for right now, I'm thinking that will be posted on Fridays, starting in April.

This week, I'll be rolling out a few shorter posts highlighting some of the bigger games throughout the season, capped off by a look at the games scheduled against out-of-state competition.

A few other things are still in the works, and as those come to fruition, I'll be posting about them here, in what I plan to be a weekly update on what's going on with the site. There is one other big announcement to be made later in the preseason, but not quite yet, so keep an eye out for that as well.
