The senior guard for the Hanover High School girls basketball team finished with a game-high 20 points and three 3-pointers, as the Marauders extended their winning streak to 13 and became only the second team this season to defeat Hollis Brookline on its home court with a convincing 70-54 triumph on Friday evening. What makes Schwarz’s game so unique is her versatility, as she certainly can shoot the ball from downtown, but she also makes winning basketball plays with her strong defense, ability to take care of the ball in traffic and finding open teammates for easy baskets with her strong attention to detail. “Diana has been a four-year varsity player for us and is coming back from an ACL tear last year,” Marauders coach Dan O’Rourke said. “I have coached her since fourth grade, and she has a huge heart. She just plays 32 minutes of hard play, and she is the heart and soul of our team. I am sad to see her go in a few months, but she is a great player that I have enjoyed watching for eight years.” In this Division II tilt, junior guard Madison McCorkle scored 11 of her 15 points in the second half for Hanover (14-1). Leading the way for the Cavaliers (10-4) was junior Christina Balsamo, who finished with a team-high 17 points and three treys. Elizabeth Bonnette (13 points), Brodie Kelley (12 points) and Amanda Goclowski (10 points) played well in the loss. The Cavaliers, who have posted a pair of five-game winning streaks this winter, took a 17-15 lead at the end of one on a left-wing 3-point shot by Balsamo with 55 seconds remaining. Hollis Brookline kept up the pressure in the second and built its largest lead of the night at 25-19 with 4:13 left on two made foul shots by Balsamo. “I thought we hung in there for quite a while, and I was playing five kids and after a while that catches up to you,” Cavaliers coach Bob Murphy said. “Christina Balsamo has been sick for a couple days, but I was happy she was here (Friday) because we would have been in rough shape if she was not.” An old-fashioned three-point play by Marauders junior center Willet Parkins off an inbounds pass with 52.3 seconds left gave the visitors a 29-26 advantage and ended a 10-1 spurt. Hanover took a 32-28 lead into the break on a 3-point shot by Schwarz from the left wing with 12 ticks on the clock. Hanover’s depth was vital, as it put eight players on the score sheet. HB only received points from its five starters. Also, rebounding was a huge plus on the side of the Marauders, as they hit the boards hard and kept balls alive, generating numerous second-chance opportunities. “It was a very fast-paced game end to end,” O’Rourke said. “Over time, our depth wore them down. Our kids were patient and resilient.” Schwarz dribbled into a 3-point attempt from the right wing with 2:41 left in the third, and she found the bottom of the net, giving her squad a double-digit advantage for the first time at 43-32\. HB continued fighting and pulled to within 43-38 on a phenomenal backdoor cut by Kelley for an old-fashioned three-point play with 1:43 remaining. The visitors led 45-38 heading into the final eight minutes, but Schwarz drilled home the dagger with a left-baseline 3 with 3:06 left, pushing the lead up to 60-47. “It was a tough win,” O’Rourke said. “We knew Hollis Brookline was the defending Division II champions and it is never easy to win here. We did not get rattled when we got down by six in the second quarter, and we stayed composed and were able to hit some shots. We slowly got ahead, and then we got a lead and started to get comfortable. I was very proud with how we played.” The Cavaliers will be back in action on Wednesday, as they will travel to Bishop Brady for a 7 p.m. start, and then the Marauders will host Kennett at 7 p.m. next Friday.
