WINDHAM – David Hampton scored his one thousandth point in the Lebanon High School boys basketball team’s win over Milford on Friday.

Fortunately for the Raiders, Hampton wasn’t done scoring.

The senior had a game-high 27 points, including seven 3-pointers, as Lebanon held off a fourth-quarter run by Windham to beat the Jaguars 59-55 on Monday.

Five of Hampton’s 3s came in the second half, including two back-to-back after Windham went on a 9-0 run to trim a 10-point deficit to one midway through the fourth.

“David Hampton was the difference in this game,” Lebanon coach Kieth Matte said. “He just needs an inch and it’s a good look for him. He doesn’t force shots and he’s under control.”

Windham held Hampton to eight points in the first half, but in the second, he was able to find enough space to get his shots.

“In the first half, we did a good job making (Hampton) uncomfortable,” Windham coach Todd Steffanides said. “In the second half, he got too comfortable and we didn’t do a good enough job of making his catches tough. When you let a shooter like that get catches, he gets in rhythm. Give credit to (Hampton), he worked hard to get his catches.”

Nic Shepherd and Dominick Morrill each added nine points for the Raiders (7-1 in Division II), who won their fifth straight, but had to survive a scare from the Jagaurs (2-5).

Windham got 15 points from Tucker Lippold, including three 3s, while David Carbonello added 11 and Joe Frake had 10\. It was the third time this season the Jaguars have lost by four points or less.

“We’ve been in this position a number of times,” Steffanides said. “I thought we played hard. We battled for the most part.”

The Jaguars stayed in the game, despite falling behind by at least seven points three times in the third quarter. Lebanon opened the fourth with a 3 from Hampton, putting the Raiders up 46-36.

But Windham came right back. A put back by Joe Lorenz and a jumper by Lippold made it a six-point game under a minute later. After a double intentional foul on Lorenz and Lebanon’s Dylan Drew, a layup by Frake and a 3 by Lippold cut the lead to 46-45.

“Windham is athletic, they play hard, they’re well-coached,” Matte said. “If they shoot OK, they’ll be in the game, and they hit some shots (Monday). They don’t quit.”

The teams traded points to keep it a one-point game when Hampton gave the Raiders some breathing room. His first 3 made it a four-point game, and after a layup by Windham’s Zach Hennessey, Hampton hit another 3 to make it 54-49 with 3:32 left.

Windham got back within one, 56-55, with 1:30 to play, but turned the ball over twice with the chance to tie or take the lead. Lebanon hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch to keep the Jaguars at bay.

“They just scrapped,” Matte said. “We gave up some easy shots, but they got to the rack a few times. Windham just scrapped and got second shots. They play as hard as any team.

We should have put it away, but we couldn’t. They played harder than us in the fourth quarter. We made some free throws at the end and that was the game.”

Both teams return to action on Friday, as Lebanon hosts Goffstown and Windham hosts Con-Val.
