LONDONDERRY - The ball sometimes takes a funny bounce on a grass field, so when a penalty corner looks the way its supposed to, it's key to take advantage.

That's just what Taylor Guibord did.

Midway through overtime Wednesday against Londonderry, Guibord and Sophie Bilodeau tried to run a give-and-goal on a corner, and despite the speed of the play not looking like it does on turf, the ball made its way to Guibord.

The senior didn't hesitate, putting the ball into the back of the cage with 4:57 left in the OT to give the Cardinals a 3-2 win over the Lancers in a Division I game.

"It was an exciting game," Guibord said. "We were all tired. We’re a fast team and we’re athletic, so we knew we had to get it up there and get a corner. It was planned to be a give-and-go, which ended up working. I got the tip and instead of swinging, I pushed it to the net and it ended up working."

It was Bishop Guertin's second corner of the overtime after they'd been putting pressure on the Lancers' defense for most of the extra session, with Guibord leading the charge.

"That’s just who she is and the player she is," Bishop Guertin coach Dakota Bilodeau said. "She is gritty and she wants it, and it resonates through the whole team. I can’t say enough great things about the kid. We kept getting corners, one has to go in. She’s a difference maker. Whether she was getting it, or somebody else, I knew she was going to be part of that equation."

Sophie Bilodeau also had a goal to go with the assist and Maddie Harrington also scored, as the Cardinals (5-2, No. 9 in the NHHSSports Coaches Poll)battled back from an early deficit to take a 2-1 lead in the final minute of the third quarter.

Londonderry (4-5) got two goals from Keira Strike, as she opened the scoring in the first, and then tied the game with 12:01 remaining. Ashleigh Leone and Ava Windisch had an assist each and goalie Abbigail Cook made seven saves.

Coming off a 2-0 loss to Windham on Tuesday, Londonderry coach Nichole Treadway was happy with the way her team was able to stay in the game.

"Coming back-to-back, going against Windham (Tuesday), you cringe," she said. "You’ve got to worry about the things you can control, and that’s not something you can control. We’ve got to embrace it and do the best we can.

"I feel like they came ready to play, and they played really well and fought hard."

The Lancers had to do so to keep the Cardinals from taking the lead earlier than they did.

Harrington tied the game with 7:05 to go until halftime, and for the rest of the half, Bishop Guertin dictated play. The Cardinals had two corners in the final four minutes and had another opportunity to score when a reverse hit by Guibord found the stick of Addison Daddona at the far post, but Cook was able to get over to make the save.

Bishop Guertin had three more corners in the third quarter, but couldn't break through until the final one, when Sophie Bilodeau scored with 59 seconds to go before the fourth.

"It felt like every time we got the ball, there was like three of them there," Guibord said. "They were doing a great job stepping to the ball and not letting us get into their circle, which was definitely the piece we were missing, just getting by and getting a shot on goal. Once we did that, we were able to execute."

Londonderry responded in the fourth, getting Strike's second goal to tie the game, and then it looked like the Lancers might go in front moments later, getting a breakaway. Alison Chambers appeared to have a step on the last Cardinals' defense and fired a shot from the edge of the circle, but it went wide.

"She’s still learning some of that stuff," Treadway said of the sophomore. "I pulled her up to forward because I wanted her to have some offensive push. I think she was thinking midfielder and that someone was going to be up there.

"That’s just, as you get more mature with the game, I probably would have taken it in to see what I could have done. Some of that is being young and being aware."

The teams continued to go back and forth with the ball for the rest of the quarter, until Bishop Guertin had a handful of corners late, including one in the final minute. But Londonderry's defense was able to clear the circle and send the game into overtime.

"Londonderry is always a great program," Dakota Bilodeau said. "They have great coaches and they always have great athletes, especially playing on their field. We come in here, we know it’s grass, and they’re used to playing on this every single day. We know it’s going to be a challenge no matter where we play them."
