GOFFSTOWN - Marisa McLaughlin can tell when the Goffstown High School girls lacrosse team is ready to play based on how much energy the Grizzlies have before the game.

For Tuesday's Division II preliminary-round game against Kingswood, the energy was off the charts for the Grizzlies.

No. 6 Goffstown opened the game with four goals in the first five minutes, led by a baker's dozen at halftime, and never looked back on the way to an 18-2 win over No. 11 Kingswood in a game played at Saint Anselm College's Grappone Stadium.

The win is the first playoff victory in program history for Goffstown (12-5) and sends the Grizzlies to the quarterfinals, where they will face No. 3 Hollis Brookline at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

"I’m really happy with a great team win and the girls followed the game plan, which is always great," McLaughlin said. "I think it always translates on to the field, too, when they show up and they have great energy. It’s great because I can tell it’s going to be a good day, and that definitely was the case (Tuesday). They’re happy to make each other look good."

The Grizzlies did plenty of that, as eight of their 18 goals had assists, and several times, they were able to not only run a successful clear, but turn it into a transition goal at the other end.

"Last couple practices, that’s what we’ve been focusing on, getting the clears out fast, getting the diagonal passes off that," Goffstown junior Eva deMatteis said. "We couldn’t do that without our goalie Abaigael (Estano). Getting people wide and having the attack push down allowed us to get those clears off really fast."

Estano finished the game with six saves, helping the Grizzlies keep the Knights (5-10) off the board for the first 45 minutes.

Morghan Dodge had four goals and two assists and Peyton Duff also had four goals to lead the Goffstown offense. Cadence Hirsch added two goals and two assists and Jocelyn Ashford had two goals and an assist while deMatteis had a goal and an assist.

Avery Brisiel, Nora Erwin, Mia Brissette, Abigail Dubreuil and Ava Ruggiero had a goal apiece for the Grizzlies. Mae Sealy and Gabrielle Millas each had an assist.

"That’s always the goal," McLaughlin said of the balanced scoring attack. "I think it makes it best-case scenario for us when we go into games because there’s not just one shooter that you need to shut down. The wins and losses I feel good about are the ones where everyone comes into play."

Kingswood got late goals from Charlotte Ling and Sarah Paraskos while goalie Hailey Kelly made nine saves.

A couple of those saves came early on free positions by Goffstown, but when the Grizzlies ran their offense, they were able to beat the Knights' defense. Hirsch scored back-to-back goals to give Goffstown a 5-0 lead with 17:27 remaining in the half, with the junior's second goal coming off Kingswood's first shot of the game.

Estano came up with the save on the shot and quickly got the ball out to Dodge, who raced down the field before giving the ball to Ashford, who then found Hirsch for the goal.

The Knights' second shot of the game ended in similar fashion. Estano again found Dodge after making the save, and the sophomore change fields again, finding Ashford for another goal and a 9-0 lead with 10:38 left in the half.

"That was a huge win because we definitely went over it in practice (Monday)," McLaughlin said. "To see that they showed up on the field and did it in the game, that’s great, because it means they’re actually connecting the dots. Abaigeal, she is unreal."

The win gives Goffstown another shot at HB (13-4), who knocked the Grizzlies out of the playoffs a year ago and who handed them a 19-6 loss earlier this season.

"It’s going to be a big game," deMatteis said. "I think we’re super excited. To have redemption this year, I think it’s going to be an exciting game."
