HOLLIS - Deanna Goodwin thought whenever her Goffstown High School girls basketball team gave Hollis Brookline room to operate its offense, the Cavaliers were taking advantage.

Good news for the Grizzlies, they didn't give the Cavs enough room to operate too often.

Goffstown held HB scoreless for the first six-plus minutes Friday night and answered every run by the Cavs to hold on for a 46-32 win in Division II action.

Molly McQueeney led the way with 17 points for the Grizzlies (9-7) while Cassidy Lalumiere added nine and Rene Roggenbuck had seven. But it was on the defensive end where Goffstown won the game, holding the Cavs to 15 fewer points than when the teams played two weeks ago. The Grizzlies also managed to hold HB's Bri Hackett to just nine points after she had 25 in the first game.

"We were able to stay focused and make sure we took care of business," Goodwin said. "I think there were a couple of times that they were able to take advantage of us sagging off a little bit. Every open opportunity they had, they capitalized on and we had to make the adjustment and make sure they didn't have those opportunities."

Hackett's team-high point total came on three 3-pointers and Cassandra Stapelfeld added eight points for the Cavs, who trailed 8-0 to open the game but managed to close the gap to three points, 16-13, by halftime.

"It had to do with that we were trying to run a motion offense against their zone and we were getting better shot opportunities," HB coach Bob Muprhy said of how the Cavs got back in the game. "I was asking the kids from the beginning to take the ball to the basket. We played bad basketball and we were still in the game, so that's why I was excited at halftime. If we could just get good offense going, I mean, holding them to 16 points at halftime was pretty good I thought."

HB (7-9) cut the lead to one twice in the third quarter, pulling within 20-19 with 3:32 left in the frame, but Goffstown closed out the third with a 9-3 run to go up by seven to start the fourth.

The lead grew to 10 points before a basket by Stapelfeld and two free throws by Kristen DuPont cut it back down to six with 4:06 remaining. But Goffstown had an answer again, as Lalumiere hit a 3 to give the Grizzlies a 36-27 lead that proved to be insurmountable.

"I was hoping for this one," Murphy said. "It might have been a good situation for us and now, with the seed we’re going to end up with, we’re going to be facing one of the top teams. We’ll see what happens because we’ve beaten a couple of them."
