Goffstown football wraps up season with win against Dover (video)

GOFFSTOWN - There was one thing the Goffstown High School football team was really focus on Thursday night against Dover.

The Grizzlies wanted to get a win at home in their final game of the year.

Goffstown ran its way to that win, piling up almost four hundred yards on the ground while getting touchdowns from four players in the first half to beat Dover 49-19 in a Division I 10th game.

Jayden Pares had three touchdowns for the Grizzlies (4-6), as he had two touchdowns rushing to go with 116 offensive yards and a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown. Billy Schmidt added 167 yards rushing, including a 93-yard touchdown run.

Sam Chapman also had two rushing scores to go with 84 yards and Jurgen Gannon had a 15-yard score in the first half.

"We’ve got a lot of guys who are contributing now, and when you run a system like this, we run the same thing every day," Goffstown coach John Preston said. "Everyone gets coached, everyone gets the same stuff, so you can plug and play in certain aspects like that. That’s really helped out our development for sure."

The Grizzlies scored on the second play of each of their first three possessions and led 20-6 less than five minutes into the game. Dover's Grant Davis returned an onside kick attempt by Goffstown 48 yards for a score in between the Grizzlies' second and third scores.

Davis was also 10 of 12 passing for 89 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Both of the touchdowns came after halftime and went to Camden Grund, with the second giving the senior 11 touchdown catches on the year to set a program single-season record.

Grund finished with eight catches for 69 yards.

"In the first half, I’m not sure we did anything well," Dover coach Eric Cumba said. "Grant made a great play on that onside kick. It was a heads up play by a kid who, that’s been his thing all year. He’s a smart player and a great kid. We were able to get a little rhythm on offense in the second half. I thought we started to play a little more downhill."

Turnovers hurt the Green Wave (3-7) in the second quarter, as Dover had the ball inside the Goffstown 20 twice, but two interceptions ended scoring chances.

The first, a pick by Goffstown's Sawyer Nault ended up coming back to the Green Wave on a fumble six plays later. But five plays after that, Pares intercepted Davis for a pick-6 that helped the Grizzlies take a 42-6 lead at halftime.

"It wasn’t our cleanest football game," Preston said. "They’re starting to learn here that blocking for six seconds, giving effort for six seconds, and just playing physical football, the end result will be there the majority of the times. Those seniors wanted it. We hadn’t won at home yet and that was important for us. I’m proud of these guys. They played hard and I’m happy we got one more for them."
