# Goffstown football scores early, often in win over Nashua South

NASHUA - There are fast starts, and there is what the Goffstown High School football team did Friday night to Nashua South.

The Grizzlies scored on four of their first 10 offensive plays, including the first one of the game, and found the end zone on nine of their 10 possessions to beat the Panthers 61-14 in a Division I game at Stellos Stadium.

Goffstown rushed for almost five hundred yards, with three players breaking a hundred. Casey Gervais rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns on five carries, Connor Bourque added 104 yards and two scores on nine carries and Carter Cormier added 124 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries.

The Grizzlies (5-0) had 471 yards rushing and nine touchdowns on 46 attempts, an average of 10.2 yards per carry.

"I thought our offensive line played well, so the thing to do was run the ball," Goffstown coach Justin Hufft said. "It looked like we blocked well up front and when you can do that, that helps. And Connor Bourque makes a lot of things happen, whether you block well for him or not. Casey (Gervais) ran the ball well."

The defense did its part, holding South (1-4) scoreless until late in the third quarter. The Panthers had just 47 yards total in the first half, and picked up two first down in the opening 24 minutes.

"We knew they were a challenge to stop because they've got that two-headed monster," South coach Scott Knight said. "They've got a big, strong quarterback, and he runs that option well, and then they've got (Bourque). He's a special player. He's one of the best backs in the state. He's a game-changer, and right now, we're not playing well anywhere. We've been struggling with stopping people a little bit. That was a very bad matchup for us (Friday)."

It started almost immediately, as Goffstown's Andrew Duval intercepted a pass by South quarterback Sean Holland on the second play of the game. On the next snap, Bourque ran up the middle for a 60-yard touchdown that made it 7-0 just 52 seconds into the game.

After South went three-and-out, the Grizzlies needed five plays to go 47 yards and find the end zone on a 3-yard run by Gervais to make it 14-0 with 7:57 left in the first. Goffstown's defense made another stop, and this time, a big punt return by Bourque gave the Grizzlies the ball at the South 22-yard line.

On the next play, Duval took a handoff from Gervais and ran around the right side before cutting back almost all the way across the field to find the end zone and a 21-0 lead with 6:17 remaining in the first.

Another South punt set up another touchdown, this time a 40-yard run by Gervais, where ran to the left before reversing field inside the 10 and getting to the far pylon. That made it 28-0 with 3:22 still to go in the opening quarter.

"We hit the ground running, which is nice," Hufft said. "We've got some explosive kids who are making some plays, so that's a nice thing. There's a hunger there. The kids, they like to compete and they like to make things happen. It's contagious among the kids. They see other kids making plays and they want to make a play."

The Panthers picked up a first down on their next drive, but eventually had to punt again, and on the second play of the second quarter, Bourque scored from 5 yards out to make it 35-0.

Nik Moquin added touchdown runs of 10 and 19 yards, respectively, before the first half ended to put Goffstown up 49-0 at the break. The only drive the Grizzlies failed to score on - both in the half and for the game - came right before halftime, when they elected to let the clock run out.

"We're kind of in uncharted territory," Knight said. "I've never experienced this before. We'll regroup (Saturday) and get ready for next week. But we'll be OK. I like the kids, they work hard, but we've got to find our swagger. We don't have any swagger and we've got to get it back."

South has lost four in a row, all by at least 20 points, and its the first time the Panthers have lost four in a row since opening the 2005 season with five consecutive losses.

The win helps Goffstown keep pace with conference-foe Bedford, which also improved to 5-0 with a win over Keene. The two teams meet in Goffstown on Oct. 10.
